The Well Tattooed Stephanie Gunter (bikini & pinup)

Thanks for all the comments. It's been crazy at the day job, so forums and photography have taken a back seat lately. Here's one more from the pin-up style set... If you want a peek at the full size image, here's a link.

The Well Tattooed Stephanie Gunter (bikini & pinup)

I kind of thought the nice bokeh from the 300mm f/2.8 makes the shot. I did a test shoot the day before with the 70-200mm VR-I and it isn't anywhere nearly as nice. But point taken. I suppose I could have changed the angle and used only the tree. All sky is too much contrast IMHO. Good catch...

The Well Tattooed Stephanie Gunter (bikini & pinup)

Wow. I didn't expect to see this many replies... Thanks to each of you for the compliments on the images. I find it rewarding to try and switch back and forth between the Hasselblad in the studio and the D3 Nikon outside. Hopefully I'll get control of the P45 back in natural light and that could...

The Well Tattooed Stephanie Gunter (bikini & pinup)

Stephanie is married to Billy-Jack Gunter, the owner of Artistic Encounter Tattoo in Dallas and the artist who has done all of my tattoo work. These were shot at my new studio location. At the pool (gotta love a 300mm prime for natural light!): Nikon D3, Nikkor 300mm f/2.8D AF-S II ISO...

    Because the D3 is Better

Thanks! Thanks. Sara really is very easy to photograph. Thank you! Thanks   Thanks Thank you. Idol? Yikes. I'm just fortunate to work with some very attractive people. In any flavor the mid-range zoom Nikkors really are a requirement for any portrait shooter...

It's super easy to install on the Mac. I didn't see any country specific information. I have no idea why it's not for sale in the UK. That's odd...

4 Year Old Apple Display Dying...

Yes I am and it's soooo much easier to use than the GMB Eye-One Match! No messing with the buttons on the display. The software controls all the settings on the display. No more loading the color profile on the video card either. Very simple setup on my Mac. Cheers!

4 Year Old Apple Display Dying...

I ended up with the NEC display and the X-Rite EyeOne Display 2. So far it's an excellent performer. Colors are gorgeous edge to edge. Very little if any color/luminance shift off axis (normal viewing angles). It's not cheap, but it's an excellent choice if color accuracy is what you're after.

    Because the D3 is Better

Thanks Doug. Your statement is true if you're pixel peeping at 100% on a digital display. However once you print these images at 11x14, I have empirical proof that the P45 images look better, even for portraits, than the D3 derived prints. Perhaps that's not really a concern for some, but I...

    Because the D3 is Better

The first time I saw Sara Mae, I think I said the same thing... Thank you very much! Thanks Fred! What would be grand is if I could coax this kind of image out of the P45! Thank you, but I'm really not a hero. A lovable guy maybe, but certainly no hero. Thank you...

    Because the D3 is Better

Most of you that might follow my Flickr stream or Pbase portfolio know that last year I moved from the D3 as my primary camera to a Hasselblad H2/PhaseOne P45 medium format digital system. It's a superb studio camera but the back's low light capabilities are limited to ISO 200 and slower (the...

    Actor Headshots

8x10 ratio is almost a hard and fast rule in the acting business. I've seen it broken in Los Angeles, but every talent agent I've worked with says 8x10 is the format. Take a look at Mark Robert Halper's work for some really solid examples. Then there's always Kevyn Major Howard, but I'm thinking...

4 Year Old Apple Display Dying...

Nobody with an opinion? Well, after a visit to the Apple Store on Sunday, I've ordered the NEC PA241W-BK along with their calibration software and branded Eye-One Display 2 colorimeter. I should have it in a few days and will post my opinion after the install.

4 Year Old Apple Display Dying...

It has served me well, but I'm afraid it's days are very numbered as it doesn't like to power on and when it does, the LED is still dark. I've talked to the Apple folks and they believe it's not just the external power supply, so I'm looking at replacing it. The system behind it is a 2007...

Russian Model Anna in Ekatchrome Blue

Thanks Steve. Thanks Tom. I believe her natural color is dark brown. She has hazel/greenish eyes yet very pale skin. Thanks Fred. I though the hat was a cool touch. I'll post one of those in a minute. Thanks Leung. Did you mean a real life Thrill? Thanks Alan. That horizontal...

Russian Model Anna in Ekatchrome Blue

There are certain models that I think just look sublime when I process their images using Alien Skin's Exposure Color Film Plug-in set for 1970's Ektachrome blue. I do a bit of tweaking to the contrast and tone panel, so YMMV... Model: Anna B. MUA/H: Valerie Davis Hasselblad H2/PhaseOne...

Sandy is a mom of 2 and modeled when she was younger. Since I'm always looking for striking faces, I asked her to sit for me. Here's one of my favorites from the shoot. Model & MUA: Sandy Mize Hasselblad H2/PhaseOne P45, HC 150mm f/3.2 ISO 100, f/11, 1/125 Hensel Integra 500 &...

    Campbell Agency Model/Actor Kate

Bazza, Thanks for taking the time to view and comment on my photograph. No need to apologize for your opinion or observations. I will however point out that most of the 'flaws' that you have observed are not considered undesirable in current portraiture. Cropping the top of the model's head is a...

    Campbell Agency Model/Actor Kate

Thanks Troy. I make sure to tell the clients to not get too hung up on the full size digital image. What really counts is the printed image for their headshot. Given the relative resolution of the print process, most of these 'imperfections' won't even be visible. Thanks for the comment Liors...

    Campbell Agency Model/Actor Kate

I had the pleasure of working with a team from the Campbell Agency last weekend. It really makes a difference when a team of professional hair and makeup artists come together for a shoot! Leo, I use white seamless all the time. I was simply illustrating an option. More likely that I will remove background light to make it darker, but either is still possible.

    It's been a long time...

Pursuit Gray when exposed properly should read RGB values around 177,177,177. It's not far to push that to 250,250,250. Typically around 2 stops. I certainly wouldn't do it on a regular basis because it's hard to get that much light evenly across the 108" background. But in a pinch, you can do...

Thanks Laura. I've been following you on Pbase... Great stuff. Thanks for the comments. To answer your question, I shoot primarily on seamless paper backgrounds. My favorite colors are Arctic White, Pursuit Gray, and Jet Black (Superior brand, but I like Savage also). I find that the gray is...

    Wild Hair/MU Shoot

What I find most interesting is that Laura has used a lighting scheme that would be otherwise quite 'normal' if shot straight on and made it shine simply by changing the direction the model is facing. One light sets are my favorites. Well done!

I bought the P45, not the P45+, from a individual found on the Luminous Landscape forum. I've looked at the H4D system, but as I'm also not a professional, it's price tag is far, far from my range. Good luck!

    It's been a long time...

Thanks Shaun. I would hesitate calling me a 'professional' as I certainly don't come anywhere near making a living with photography. Recently I've been leaning towards the starving artist category. Although my waistline shows no indication of such status :D. I may use professional gear, but...

    It's been a long time...

Thanks Graeme! I've not given up the D3 by a long run. I'm a firm believer in using the best tool for the job, and so far in natural light, the D3 is my chosen weapon. I haven't yet figured out how to get more light into my garage, so for shots like the one below of 14 year old Brittany, the...

    It's been a long time...

Thanks Sean! The images the P45 makes are pretty darn big. I've had to change my workflow a little to accommodate the huge files. No more 5 or 6 layers unless you want gigabyte files. The 16bit color depth recorded by the sensor is breathtaking. It even makes the D3 files seem a little muddy...
