Site upgrade feedback, bugs, and requests thread

To me... it seems a step backward from a usability standpoint. On the desktop we had "Unread" and "Mark Read" always perched at the top, and at the bottom on mobile. Now, it's inconsistent at best, and sometimes inconvenient.

    Choppy Video Playback

If you are used to shooting RAW, you are in for a bit of an awakening as with video, you have much less data (8 or 10 bit as opposed to 14) to work with. You need to get it as right as possible in-camera. In 10 bit you have some leeway with grading, but 8 bit not so much. Different scenes will...

    Choppy Video Playback

I think you may have missed my point. CODECs are needed for any video, but ones embedded in highly optimized hardware (SOC) will significantly outperform software running on an all purpose CPU even though considerable more raw computing power may be available. Think of it as driving tacks using...

    Choppy Video Playback

Many PCs won't play 4k without dropping frames due to no hardware based codecs. The CPU is struggling to decompress the frames.

Heading to San Diego any suggestions of what to photograph?

I would add Torrey Pines, Batiquitos Lagoon, downtown, and the flower fields in Carlsbad, of course the zoo and wild animal park... hell, there are just so many places in this wonderful area. Just Google it... both north and south county.

    Video

Depends on how much horsepower you have. Premier and Final cut can create low Rez proxies for editing, which is necessary on my machine for 4k. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I seem to recall that feature is missing from the free version of Resolve.

    Video

It really depends on what you need for video. For instance, if you need continuous auto-focus, Nikon DSLRs are about the worst choice possible. Nikon Z6 mirrorless is best in this regard on Nikon, plus it has IBIS stabilization if you need to shoot hand held. An EVF is very desirable as well...

Finally - file system for iPad!!!

I believe things are headed the other way around. As iOS progresses, it will become the predominant OS for Apple. In fact, the APFS fie system that was introduced in macOS High Sierra was actually onboard iOS more than a year earlier (Apple just chose to hide it from us - like so many other...

    Swabbing My Sensor

For the last 15 or so years I have used Photographic Solutions' sensor swabs with their Eclipse solution. No complaints, but it is time to reorder and I find them a little pricey now-a-days, and read several comments online that the "new and improved" models use a ribbed material that seems to...

    My new macro lens

Tamron and Sigma seem to be knocking it out of the park for the most part in recent years. Not only with their quality and value, but with their service as well. I think Panasonic made an incredibly wise decision to partner with Sigma on their L mount glass for the S1's.

Opinions Please - Business Card Design

I agree with you in the sense that if you're presenting yourself as a professional designer, photographer, or artist, your card better show off your affinity for the aesthetic... and a photo card of any kind just doesn't say that to me.

Opinions Please - Business Card Design

I am not of fan of the photo card. I think a graphic logo (embossed, raised, or foiled), with a touch of color, on heavy matte stock looks and feels more profesional. But if you wish to stick with this I retouched your photo and typography a bit. What do you think?

    Nikon Z7 sensor cleaning

    Nikon Z7 sensor cleaning

But did you even read it? "Remove any dust and lint from the filter with a blower. Do not use a blower-brush, as the bristles could damage the filter. Dirt that can not be removed with a blower can only be removed by Nikon-authorized service personnel. Under no circumstances should you touch or...

Possible to use Garmin navigation on a Chrysler audio and video?

Mike... I get the convenience of having navigation displayed on your car's screen (that is why I have an Android Auto compatible unit in the dash), but in your case it is convenience at the loss of function. Using Waze or Google Maps on your phone gives you free, realtime updates on maps, live...

    Quality of adapter?

The adaptor has no glass, designed only to add the correct flange distance to the mount. The light falling on the sensor will be identical. Since the focus sensors are on the sensor, no focus calibration should be necessary (the sensor knows when it is in focus).
  29. scottinpollock

How Fast Is the Z7's Silent Shutter

It certainly cuts down on the wear and tear of the mechanical shutter. My mirrorless of choice for the last year or so has been the Lumix G9, which I leave set to E-Shutter most of the time. But it has significantly faster readout time (granted with a sensor half the size and resolution)...

How Fast Is the Z7's Silent Shutter

And if the set shutter speed is fast enough, we're not talking about blur... every line captured will be sharp. It is just that if there is movement, it will be recorded in a slightly different position. Can sometimes make for some cool effects.

Any one with experience in off brand batteries?

Same here... been using them for years without issue, despite their 3 year warranty and California based customer service. Dunno if they have batteries for Z cameras, but if they do... highly recommended.
  32. scottinpollock

How Fast Is the Z7's Silent Shutter

Indeed. And that is what I thought you meant... I was just clarifying for others that might misconstrue your description to mean the sensor was scanned from side to side.
  33. scottinpollock

How Fast Is the Z7's Silent Shutter

To be clear, the sensor is scanned top to bottom, hence horizontal movement is more affected then vertical movement. Vertical movement tends to just get fattened or narrowed (depending on direction), while horizontal is bent as the top of the one o'clock blade is captured earlier than the areas...

How Fast Is the Z7's Silent Shutter

Things you are most likely to notice with electronic shutter are banding with some frequencies of artificial light, and motion distortion when something is quickly moving across the frame. These things happen due to the readout speed (scanning) of the sensor, which can be much slower than the...

Question for NEF files on MAC

I am afraid I will have to disagree. Apple has learned (and became rich) that their users will spend good money on disposable devices every year or two. This has affected design decisions on the Mac side. The new machines are essentially unrepairable by AAP's, and their agressive stance against...

Mac Book Pro And Time Machine

Depends, are you interested in supporting the developer? Other than that, the paid version has the ability to do incremental updates. Pretty sure that's the only major difference. BTW... a suggestion for BU strategy is two backups, one regularly rotated off site (I use a safe deposit box).
  39. scottinpollock

Question for NEF files on MAC

Well, since you asked... because the file system sucks, there is no replacement for quick indexing (making volume wide file searches like molasses), they moved from AFP to SMB (but SMB1 support is broken), they are more and more locking down the ONE THING that has made the Mac stand out for the...

Mac Book Pro And Time Machine

You don't... other than to reinitialize the time machine disk and start over. I've been using Time Machine for many years and I have never had a problem with a restore or migration, but with that said, occasionally make full, bootable backups using SuperDuper.

Do you have your own domain name? How do you use it?

It really depends on what your needs are, and what design/coding skills you have. If you're short on the latter, something like SmugMug or SquareSpace is probably one of the better ways to go. But nothing beats having your own host and being able to put up whatever you want. Thats what I did...

    Motion Blur

Thanks. Just posted an update that adds a "Keep Below" number calculated from the sensor's diagonal/1500 CoC method. This number is a best guess at what will be noticeable on an 8"x10" print viewed from 10 inches. This method may be a little conservative on crop sensor cameras.

    Motion Blur

Thanks guys... I have restored the link above for those that might find this useful (as I did) rather than pedantically argue its merit. For now you'll have to decide how much pixel movement results in an acceptable CoC for your output, although I may try and create an equation for that...

I was doing some serious up-close motion freezing this last weekend and was a little frustrated initially. Review - Smallrig L-Bracket for Nikon Z6/Z7 Cameras

Agreed that the stuff is solidly made, and dirt cheap compared to the typical small shop counterparts like RRS and Kirk. Plus they have a much more complete ecosystem including cable clamps, handles, etc. I have their L bracket on my G9 and there is one thing to be aware of. The distance...
