    Velvia

I'm not inviting flame here :Smoking:, but if you have the opportunity to pick up a copy of the Nov issue of the Japanese magazine, Cameraman, you'll find a comparision between the Velvia and digital cameras like the Canon 5D and D200... I think digicam has still a long way to go before getting...

A hike, and a Hakka meal (long post)

Great stuff. With all those food, I'm sure it was enjoyable, LOL! One thing, why are Hakka considered peasants? Correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't Hakka translates directly to "Guests", as in the case that they don't have a province of their own?

    Some B&W ...

    Shot the TP at ISO64, soup in Diafine, A - 4min and B - 1min. Acros 100 is done at ISO320 (I think 250 may be just right), 4+4.

    Some B&W ...

What about the Acros that you don't like? I personally find the acros has good tonality (I like longer toe). The only problem I have is that it eats fixer, and as with the TMX100, it requires a substantially longer fixing time.

Some false-color IR shots from Japan.

Hi Logan, The R-D1s has a sensor similar to the D70, and if you like the image quality of the D70, you'll like the R-D1/s. Compared to the Leica M8 (the only other choice), it is obviously not as well built, but it has a closer ergonomics to flim RF cameras (with its advance lever and...

Some false-color IR shots from Japan.

Hi Graeme, Shooting in IR is not that much different from shooting in visible light. The use of a very dark red filter would mean 2 things however: 1) If your camera is not modify to remove the IR-cut filter, exposure would be long. Focusing would also be difficult or impossible if...

    Some B&W ...

... from a recent trip to Japan ... All shot with Kodak Technical Pan, except the pic with the 2 girls, which was shot in Fuji Acros 100. All were souped with Diafine. The compensating developer works well with contrasty films.

    Karatsu Kunchi (long post!)

This is the first time I witness the festival and I thought some of my friends here may be interested to see what it is about. The Karatsu Kunchi is a 3-day event held every year between 2-4 Nov, this festival, for the lack of better words, involves hurling "yamas" (translated to mountains)...

Adapting a Baader U-Filter (Venus filter)

Hi John :) Great to see that you're giving UV a go as well!!! Yap, the El-Nikkors are great inroads to UV. As for the filter, google for it, it is quite widely available. Have fun ;) PS: Yap, the thesis is done :)

Adapting a Baader U-Filter (Venus filter)

The Baader U-Filter (Venus filter) transmit only in the range of 300-400nm (peak 80%) and naturally, it is a great filter for UV without the need of additional IR-cut filter. The only problem is, at about US$100 a pop, it is not exactly cheap; also, at 1.25", it is not the easiest to use...

    Lens suggestions for Rome/Copenhagen trip

28/1.4 and 85/1.4, in my opinion will cover most ground and lighting conditions. Also, bring along a small compact that has a fast lens and make very little noise (to be used in quiet/sound-sensitve areas).

    35mm f2 AF/-D: Soft and Halo wide-opened ...

After seeing your gallery, I think it is a very versatile lens indeed. I'll probably use it on a film camera as I got a al' chepo F90x sitting on the shelf. The small 35 and a 85/1.8 make a good travel/on-the-go kit

Hi Andréas, thank you for the suggestion. It most certainly does what I'm looking for  I only tried 2 lenses that can do this, an old Leica Summar 50/2 (a milder effect can still be seen even stop-down all the way!!!) and the Nokton 50/1.5 for the old Voigtlander Prominent wide-opened...

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm looking for AF this time. On the manaul side, I had a Summilux 35/1.4 pre-asph that does this most pleasingly. I'm just looking for something on the AF side for the Nikon.

    35mm f2 AF/-D: Soft and Halo wide-opened ...

I'm referring to the below. It may be an one-off thingy, but if you look at the sides of the uniform sleeves, the white is "bleeding" into the darker background. The picture is also a little soft... may be camera shake, etc... All in all, I like this kind of rendition for B&W.

when a loser (like me) shoots softball with a 17-55mm

I think these are great!!! Using a shorter FL can force you to get closer to the actual people that are involved. It is straight-forward (and distance) with a long lens; but with something like a 17-55, it is both a test of other photographic perspectives and mental strength... Great!!
