    D40 + Portrait, Fast & Superzoom...

I think you've put pay to one of my misconceptions. I had thought that there was decent inexpensive non-motorised glass available in the 85-105mm range. That's my idea of what would be best for studio 'portrait' use. I also am pretty sure there's far cheaper options in the versatile...

Can use it, but it'll be manual focus. I'm not even sure if you get the focus assist indicator in the viewfinder?

    D40 + Portrait, Fast & Superzoom...

Why would I replace the very respectable kit lens with the Tamron 17-50? My uses for my camera are occasional studio rental to take shots of friends who reciprocate with shots of myself and my family. I also use it to take shots of kids' plays, shows, and general indoor events. Finally it's...

    D40 + Portrait, Fast & Superzoom...

There's a 85mm 1.8 Nikon fit with a motor? I fully agree that the D40 is a great camera. It far exceeds my ability to take photos. The problem is the extra expense and limitations presented by the lack of body motor. No matter how useful the camera itself is, if you can't get the glass for...

    D40 + Portrait, Fast & Superzoom...

I've currently got a D40 with a very average Tamron 28-300 VC lens along with the quite nice kit-lens. I've now come to the conclusion that I would like to have a more useful set of lenses. With some research of the limited set of lenses available for the D40 I settled on the following...

ABC Reporter arrested in Denver for taking pictures on a public sidewalk

My understanding of your ex-colonial oddities (sorry, bashing the rather bizarre logic someone threw in response to my previous interjection) is that the police can make a lawful demand. They can't randomly order you to do things with no basis in law. Feel free to respond with specific laws...

ABC Reporter arrested in Denver for taking pictures on a public sidewalk

I'd imagine everyone in the city is happy to know that their tax dollars will be going on funding the compensation for the complaint that will inevitibly be made against the police. In addition to that, I'm sure everyone is happy that whomever the police/hotel wanted to get in/out of the...

    Technique Question Relative to D80...

The first, out of focus 'walking figure' photo was taken at 200mm, that's 0.1ft either side of the subject in focus, infinity starting around 970ft away! Not much chance of that happening to hit focus. Moving cars and spinning on the spot are the least of your concerns. I'd recommend you...

Free upgrade to Capture NX 2 if...

Just talked to Nikon in Europe and it looks as if we're not getting the same treatment over here. Oh well. On the bright side, he did say that if I bought Capture NX from a US dealer, NikonUSA will honour the upgrade despite my location. No idea if that's verified or not though

And you thought gas prices in your part of the U.S. were high....

In the UK we pay _at least_ £1.099 per litre - that works out at about $8.30/US Gallon. The national average price is about $8.70/gallon. For what it's worth, there is one station out there somewhere selling diesel at over $11 per gallon - your gas stations would have to buy new display...

    Best portrait lense for D40

Thank you very much for all of these suggestions. I'll be looking at these options over hte next few days. Lense lust is right - I now think I want all of them :) Not sure how the 30mm crept into the conversation, but woudln't it be a nice sharp addition between fisheye and bottom end zoom...

nikon 50 f/1.8 is it good

Are there different mount versions of the 1.8? Contemplating one for my D40, and I'm happy to loose the AE, but can't afford to loose the AE. A lense compatibility chart I've read says I do loose AE on all the AI mount lenses, is there an AF mount 50mm 1.8?

Does that include any of the available 50mm 1.8 (or 1.4s) ? They seem to be AI mount? Are there more recent ones?

    Best portrait lense for D40

I find below 50mm to be too distorted for a lot of portrait, when shooting from above, the kids tend to shrink a bit, also when I _do_ go in tighter, big noses etc.. I also find I've got little discipline with zoom lenses - I'd prefer something fixed at a level that's good to go - hence the...

    Best portrait lense for D40

I don't tend to shoot that tight - usually family shots, so whole body. The 85 1.4 is way way way out of budget! I guess I want the cheaper options...

    Best portrait lense for D40

I want to get a portrait lense for my lowly D40. The important thing to note is that I don't care about AF, though I do care about AE. As it's portrait, the absolute minimum is 50mm, maximum is probably in the 80s? The old Nikon 1.8 50mm seems ideal (though possibly a little short), but I...

    Automatic RAW processing

Nope, you got it - bit of a pain to have the behemoth that is Capture NX running all the time, but it's watch function pretty much does what I want. I'll have to re-jig how I'm organising photos, but that's OK :) Now if only I could prevent it from processing every RAW I have to date! Then...

    Automatic RAW processing

Actually, this is the bit I'd like to avoid - The sorting of the files is completely automatic (a scheduled exiftool job that runs every hour), I'd like to know if there's any software that allows my computer to mimic the jpeg processing that Nikon does for all situations. Is that possible...

    Automatic RAW processing

My camera has many functions in life. 'Photography' - as in photos for their own sake. Catalog of every moment of the kids' life and holiday snapshot machine. Often these uses bounce back and forth from moment to moment. My problem is that for one of those situations ('Photography'), I...

    RC Flight Sim Software

I can vouch for Aerofly, it's what I use to brush up on skills before bringing a new bit of foam or balsa out into the real world. Looks fantastic, has quite a few choices of planes and works just fine with my Futaba TX.

What a depressingly good point - I guess that's the point at which the D40 starts to become an unattractive proposition.

    D40 battery life

I bought a couple 3rd party batteries from ebay. Even they manage to keep going for hundreds of shots. I'm flash phobic, but I assume my anti-shake must suck up some power? The thing tht I love is that accidentally leaving it switched on has minimal effect on the battery.

    D60 vs D80

Another plus fot he D60 is that the kit lense is VR, that would be quite an extra cost if you selected it for the D80. To be honest, The D60 is more compact, and is likely to do way more than she'll need. I'd recommend sticking with it.

Need some help for tonight - Dance Recital

They're great shots, worked very well. I agree as well, the WB is about perfect for most of them (although the blue set can make it look a bit cool, I guess it did in real life too). Looking at the Exif, I see the ISO was probably on auto, ranging from about 400-720? What's people's...

    A weekend in Rome

Don't know if it's the done thing to tag your own photos on someone else's thread, but this is another view #9, Il Vittoriano. A bit of PP to darken out the odd detail in the building, but otherwise untouched.

    AF-ON or Shutter Release Poll

Aww man, didn't know this function existed, but I can't use it because my wife (who picks up the camera regularly for snapping) would kill me. Hey ho, looking forward to the day I can buy the D700 as my own personal camera.. Now, where's that lottery ticket?

Full Frame lense on a DX body

I'm sorry, but I don't get how that can be true. Unless they're using really exotic materials to soak up 100% of stray light some will be bouncing around inside around the sensor. However, yes, my first assumption was that either my kit lens or my Tamron were a bit inaccurate with the F-Stop...

Full Frame lense on a DX body

So, I know the other way doesn't work, you can't put a DX lense on a full frame body. But you can put a full frame lense on a DX body. My question is, what happens to the extra light? Doesn't it bounce off the internals of the camera onto the sensor? Reason it occurred to me is that my...

Nikon 70-300 VR or Tamron 28-300 VC ???

Indeed it is. Brings into the conversation the idea of manual over auto focus. There's no way I could use manual focus with my D40 for anything but infinity or _maybe_ macro shots set-up on a tripod. Anyone know why the bottom end DSLRs (at least, don't know about the top ones) don't have...

Nikon 70-300 VR or Tamron 28-300 VC ???

For what it's worth, I think the shooting conditions were identical, settings were identical, but the Tamron came out brighter, and apparently less sharp. In that case, the lense can be blamed for not having very accurate stops, or possibly not very accurate focal lengths...? Now I think...

Nikon 70-300 VR or Tamron 28-300 VC ???

Test shots Right, totally re-did the test. Different photos completely, this time just posting 100% crops, have a look on Flickr for the whole photo. I finally got around to at least comparing the Tamron 28-300 with my 18-55 D40 lenskit. The Tamron looses on sharpness by a very visible...

Nikon 70-300 VR or Tamron 28-300 VC ???

I actually picked up a 70-300 prior to returning it and getting the Tamron. I'm a very fair weather photographer - there's very little chance that lense would see the light of day very often in my hands. Looking at the few shots I took before returning the 70-300, it's LEAGUES above my...

Nikon 70-300 VR or Tamron 28-300 VC ???

Fabulous photos, but... First post, hi! :) Those photos are fabulous, but they are very different from the results I get with my Tamron 28-300. (granted on a D40, not your D300) Just a few things I'd say about this lense. 1/ The VC is fantastic. I'm very shaky usually only going...
