Did my SB-800 tube flame out?

That's $130 I don't have. It may just have to be retired unless I can find another used one for less or I get something as a gift. I'll just have to resort to my SB-600 or one of my SB-28s even though it will be manual all the time.

Did my SB-800 tube flame out?

After taking a few shots during this past weekend, my SB-800 made a little "pop" sound and I noticed a faint smell of something almost like gun powder from the battery compartment. From then on my flash would not fire even though the "ready' light was on and would flash after pressing the flash...

Is Nikon coming up with an answer to...

I saw the Canon RF radio triggers in action at an event this past weekend. A friend of mine was firing 8 Canon speedlights at a sports event that took place in a converted warehouse. They were spread out along the top of the walls near the ceiling. He was using their ST-E3-RT. I know Pocket...

    Looking for upgrade info

A friend of mine is using a D3000 with a 3.5-5.6 kits lens that someone gave him. He's asked me about upgrade options but I've been out of the Nikon product line loop for a while since I got my D700 4 years ago. He's fine with sticking to a DX body. He doesn't what to mess around with a lot...

    Screen Captures

Has anyone heard of anything that would make it difficult to grab any of your images from the web via a screen capture app like Hypersnap? You can right-click protect an image but I guess if someone really wants it (even though it's lo-res) there's no way to really stop them. Thanks.

Thoughts on initial price point - How did you go about it?

A friend of mine hosted an athletic event on the 4th and I asked him if would be interested in having me shoot it. No contract was drawn up or signed. He wanted images he could use on his Facebook wall. I'd say I was there about 3 hours (give or take). I shot 222 RAW images and narrowed them...

    Navy Football 9/29 (Pic Heavy)

Great shots. Really takes me back as I was a student here in the early 80s. As Plebes (the ones with no stripes on the shoulder boards), we were largely responsible for maintaining the spirit during the games. That's why you see them doing push-ups when Navy scores. I envy your access...

    Feedback on this upgrade

I was wondering about the amount of RAM since LR seems to chew up all kinds of memory. I wanted to leave some headroom.

    Feedback on this upgrade

My Core2 Duo 2.4GHz/4gb RAM is not cutting it with LR 3.6 and I'm in need of an upgrade. After combing various reviews and roundups, I came up with these components. The only thing I'm keeping is the PSU, GPU and monitor. I'm hoping this will resolve all the lag, rendering delays and 'not...

    LR4 chews up memory space

I was experiencing the same issues with LR3.3 on another desktop that has an i7 3.2GHz and 12gb of ram until I installed the 3.6 update. That build should have been well beyond the minimum. I made a typo on the first post but I'm sure you know what I meant. It's a Core2 Duo 2.66 GHz. Still...

    LR4 chews up memory space

I'm using LR4 downloaded directly from Adobe's server yesterday. This should be the final version that was released just recently. According to 'check for updates', there are none.

    LR4 chews up memory space

It's an older desktop with a Core2 Duo 2.66MHz processor with 4GB of ram running W7 64-bit. LR4 uses almost every last bit of ram when running and is virtually unusable. The CPU utilization is well over 70% at times and there are no other apps running. Is this a possible memory leak...

    Another soft proofing question

I came another link on the Drycreek site. They provide the Costco Noritsu printer ICC profiles. http://www.drycreekphoto.com/icc/using_printer_profiles.htm In it, it states in step 16 to convert the image to the 'appropriate' profile. This is after all the editing work is done. Are they...

    Softproofing with CS5

Tony...I haven't had an opportunity to revisit this until a few days ago. I did as you suggested and converted to sRGB after making any changes and it made a dramatic difference. I recall doing the same thing some months back but the mistake I was making recently was assigning sRGB to the...

    Softproofing with CS5

Tony....I recalibrated it a few times but there was no real change. I think it's just the Dell 2407 monitor. It's not an IPS monitor so that might have something to do with it. I'll just have to look through the 'haze' and make a best guess as to what I want. As long as I can see the detail...

    Softproofing with CS5

TonyW....I can detect a hint of haze in your post. I was able to get the luminance down to about 110 which required me to turn the brightness all the way down. ColorMunki has you set the monitor to its factory defaults after the ambient light is measured and before the profiling is done. I'm...

    Softproofing with CS5

Lucky Duck....interesting you mention the luminance. As I was doing another calibration, the ColorMunki has you try to get the measured luminance close to the target luminance. The target was 100 and I was able to get the measured amount down to 110. The required me to turn the brightness all...

Best way to produce accurate b&w images

What is the best way to get the most accurately printed b&w image that was converted from a color one in either Lightroom or Photoshop when someone else is doing the printing? Is it worth getting their printer's ICC profile?

    Softproofing with CS5

I did exactly this. Here's a new development. If I turn off 'Simulate Black Ink' the haze I was describing goes away. Think of the haze as a thin veil of smog that doesn't go away.

    Softproofing with CS5

If you are referring to the option when you tell Costco to NOT correct the image when you place the order I do take of that. Other than that, I don't see any option that says anything about 'enhance all photos'. 1. The Noritsu ICC profile can be gotten from the DryCreek website. They have...

    Smugmug looking front end

If I spent the time working with Dreamweaver and maybe MySQL for searching that would be possible. Or if the html is already available why not do that? I don't want to spend a lot of time coding. That's why I opted to use Gallery on GoDaddy but as I stated, it's a bit of a pain. There are...

Is there a smugmug looking front end one can upload to their site? GoDaddy offers Gallery which I have used but it's a bit of a pain to deal with. I like the look of Smugmug but if I already have web space I prefer not to pay for additional functionality if I can incorporate it into my own site.

    Mounting photo to gatorboard

Shouldn't be too big of deal since they aren't archival prints. Just some things to put on my empty walls. A guy brought some prints he mounted to it to one of our photography group meetings but made no mention of what you said. Then again I don't remember if it was asked. I'll have to ask...

Lightroom 3 - Export images to a different location

Lightroom 3 - Export images to a different location

That's my same setup on my Windows 7 computer although I'm still using a 7200RPM drive. I'm beginning to suspect that maybe it's a bug with the 32-bit version of Windows 7 since no one who has responded is encountering this issue since they also happen to be running the 64-bit version.

Lightroom 3 - Export images to a different location

Because as you can see in post #9, if 'Desktop' was the last thing that was chosen at the time of the last export, you don't get the option of choosing anything else. It's only after I manually enter a path and click 'OK' then click the 'choose' button again that I am able to browse to other...

I managed to get it to work. But there's a catch. I took a suggestion from someone on the Adobe LR forum and manually entered the folder location in the 'Folder:' space. Lightroom 3 - Export images to a different location

Yes I do. But When I click the 'Choose' button, I'm not able to see anything other this. As you can see on the right (even though it's tiny), there is no root 'C' drive option to select. It starts at the 'Desktop' and that's all there is.

Lightroom 3 - Export images to a different location

I located the preferences file and moved it but nothing changed. I even created a new catalog file and added the folder that I was working on and even though I lost all the edits, it still didn't fix the export problem. So I replaced the original catalog and catalog preview folder. Now I'm...

I don't get an error message. When I attempt the export, Lightroom is locked on the C:\Users\<my username>\ directory. I can only create and/or pick a folder or sub-folder within that location. I can't pick a different directory outside of that one. I know I've done this on a different...

    Owners of the older 85/1.4D

I'm going to be getting one today for $850. I'll be the third owner but from talking to the current seller, it's been really babied. He bought a 1.4G so he's looking to unload it. I've seen them on CraigsList ranging from $850 to $975 lately.

    Owners of the older 85/1.4D

Are you itching to pull the trigger on the new AF-S 85/1.4G or are you happy with your current 1.4D? I've seen pretty reasonable prices for used 1.4Ds lately. So I'm wondering if I should save the cash, pick up a used 1.4D and use the savings on a 70-200 VRII that I was planning on getting anyway?

    Data storage working with Lightroom

The Netgear doesn't really concern me that much in this scenario. The mirroring method I use is not a RAID implementation. After the raw files are copied to one of the drives, I use a syncing program to create the duplicates on the other drive. This is done at later. So using LR3, I import...

Hermosa Beach 2010 Nivea AVP Tournament

Thanks. I give all the credit to Lightroom 3. I'm hoping to get the 70-200 VRII sometime next year. With its ability to focus faster than the older non-AFS 80-200 I currently use, I should be able to have more keepers due to improved sharpness.

Some recent shots from the CBVA Mahhattan Beach Tournament (resized)

Thanks for the tip. I'll work on keeping the pier to my back next time. Sometimes I like to shooter wider using the 80-200 so you can get a feel for the elevation some of the players get when going for a spike or block. I think it makes things look more dramatic. If I'm not feeling the shot...
