    D3X now up on www.nikonimaging.com site; $8000

I'll agree with that part of your comments. Thom's generally pretty well informed about technical details and I appreciate his insights. The focus on marketing is useless as I think few people on this board or in any other reasonably high end equipment forum are swayed by a marketing campaign...

Have you ever tried a KEH UG grade lens?

Several years back I purchased 17-35 from them that was rated UG. In was in good working order, but the barrel was pretty scuffed and there were a few small chips on the filter threads. Nothing that impacted the performance or use. I'd buy one again - that one was stolen :( but I'm waiting for...

    D700 banding?

Tried it. 6400 ISO -2EV then corrected in NX2 +2EV and a levels adjustment from 255 to 160. One slight band is visible at that extreme. I'm not sure what that translates to in effective ISO, but I know I would never normally do anything close to that. BTW ... also near Chicago. Paul

    D3 buffer upgrade

2 weeks without my D3 ... I'd have to start antidepressants. Guess I'll stick with Ducati cards and be happy.

    D700 banding?

The condition appears in some D3s - it was discussed in DPR by a couple of concert shooters. I can't replicate it in my D3 - even with a 6W LED flashlight in a dark room at +2EV. Guess I'm lucky

NFL training camp, which lens ?

Of those choices, I would take the Nikon 80-400. I used it last year at the Chicago Bears camp and if worked well on the D200. I kept it around f8 - f11 and the shots were pretty sharp. The AF isn't the fastest, but at the distance I was shooting it was fine. Unless you have a press pass, the...

    The D3 and the Expodisc

Mike, I've tried several scenarios today - outdoor, florescent, incand, mixed with the expodisc and couldn't repeat your problem. It was always close to the autoWB and sometimes a bit more accurate, but I'm not sure using the expodisc is worth the trouble for the small benefit. I'm using a D3...

    D3 V2 firmware released

I find the expodisc less usefull with the D3 than my D200 or D2hs. I now use it only for bad ice arena or gym lighting when every lamp is a different temperature. It does a pretty good job of averaging the mess. Paul

    D3 V2 firmware released

I agree ... focusing in low light is noticably better, not sure there is much of a difference in normal lighting/contrast. It may be my imagination, but my AF-D lenses seem to snap to focus a little crisper. I've had no issues with AWB - still not perfect but I have been testing it against using...

    D3 firmware B 1.11 available today

I've been told by Nikon repair (back in the D2Hs days) that there are different builds on the same version software - but they typically have only very minor changes. This at least confirms what Paul L. was told.

My 1st pic post... The Sigma 150...

Bugma??? ... that's going to put a cramp on using it for portraits :)
  12. P

    Sigma 150 2.8 for Portraits?

Nothing really. It's a little large in size and I wanted a prime in that range for a second lens during events for the D200. Now the Sigma can fill the role as a portrait lens and the occasional macro shot. Paul
  13. P

    Sigma 150 2.8 for Portraits?

A Sgima 150 has found a new home.... It was hard to turn down the 135 DC, but the Sigma was just as sharp and had almost zero CA. AF on the Sgima was also faster than the old screw driven 135. With my recent purchases, I'm beginning to feel a bit like Gary Mayo :) Paul

    Sigma 150 2.8 for Portraits?

Well, I'm off to the dealer this evening. They have both the Nikon 135 f/2 and the Sigma in stock, so I'll have a chance to compare. I'm sure I'll come home with less money in the checking account :)
  15. P

    Sigma 150 2.8 for Portraits?

Yes. I was thinking about the 150 2.8 macro, the slow AF would be a problem since although I want it mainly for portraits, all of my lenses eventually see duty for amateur sport events. Maybe I'll take another look at the 135 f/2, my local dealer has one in stock. Paul

    Sigma 150 2.8 for Portraits?

Anyone using this lens for portraits? Ever since selling my 105 F2 DC and 85 1.4 several years ago, I’ve been thinking about a new portrait lens instead of using my zooms. The Sigma 150mm seems to have very little CA, good bokeh, great sharpness. The 150mm is a bit long, but I’m pretty...

    D3 V2 firmware released

Sean, I'm seeing a similar AF improvement. It's really noticeable on my 80-400, but also my AFS lenses to a degree. A nice improvement with AF seeming to snap to focus even in dismal light. I also see some modifications to metering with ADL on, it seems to back off the exposure by 1/3...

    D3 V2 firmware released

Mistakenly posted this in the D300 thread first, but I have updated the firmware and notice a significant improvement in low light AF. No hunting with an 80-400 at 1/20 F5.6 6400ISO. Just snaped to focus. In the past, it would hunt a bit. Just a quick subjective test, but it seems promising. Paul

    D300 v1.03 firmware released

Firmware AF Improvement WOW! Just updated and did a quick test with the slow focusing 80-400 in a room at F5.6 1/20 @6400 ISO and focusing was a snap. In the past it hunted until focus. Whatever they did is very noticable. Paul

I DID IT!!! 85mm 1.4d Its here and pics added!!

I'm sure there is some optical design trade off with removing CA ... my old retired 24-120 (non-vr) has almost no CA, but not too much sharpness either. I understand the new 24-70 has CA well under control. My only hope is that Nikon started to focus, no pun, on CA after the 105 redesign. or...

I DID IT!!! 85mm 1.4d Its here and pics added!!

When I compare a scene shot with the 85 on film, or wth a lower res. digital such as the D2Hs, I don't see the CA in the scene. When the same scene is shot with my D200, it is apparent and looks like a digital capture. I don't mean in any way to imply that it looks like it was captured with a...

    Nikon 80-400mm lens

I've had this lens since it was available and it is noticably slower in focusing than any AFS lens, but if focus tracking isn't important for the shot, it can do well - even for sports. I've used it for soccer and tennis with no real problems. I also think I have a pretty good sample as the...

I DID IT!!! 85mm 1.4d Its here and pics added!!

OK, so I hate to be the dissenting newbee here, but I sold my 85MM F1.4 when I purchased my D200, because the CA bothered me. It must be a personal thing ,but I've seen it on many samples of the 85 and my 28-70 "beast" was so bad that Nikon replaced it (a 3 yr old lens! - Thanks again Nikon). I...

    Showcase Nikon 200mm f/2 VR - Part I

Thanks Frits, Got the lens last night and it's in a box waiting to go off to Nikon Tuesday for repair. Just started to get a feel for it and the AFS gave out. Anyway the buyer is picking up any repair bill or refunding my money, so I can't complain. Darn, I was looking forward to some forearm...

    Showcase Nikon 200mm f/2 VR - Part I

This thread may cost me yet. I've lusted after this lens for indoor sports for a long time with my D200. Now with the D3 - less so, but I have a chance to buy a used one for $2,900, The catch - it has a dented front ring that doesn't impact its use and has been checked by Nikon - I saw a copy of...

NX owner Lightroom user ?? which do you use?

Bill Agreed. I hear there are improvements in the release version as well and I will give it a quick try ..it won't take long to assess the NEF quality since I know what to look for. I prefer the LR UI, workflow, and speed, but it seems that since Nikon and Adobe did not play well together...

NX owner Lightroom user ?? which do you use?

Bill, I have come to the same conclusions about LR. Since moving to the MAC, I decided to try Aperature and give LR another chance. I've spent many hours the last weeks or so comparing NX, Bibble, Aperature, and LR and have the same conclusion. Beyond the colors and look, LR does not compare...

That's exactly my situation and I use the latest release candidate version of Parallels. It works perffectly with the VPN and Outlook. Running the apps under the "coherence" feature makes them seem like PC apps running in OS X. very cool. Drag and drop even works. Also, XP on the MAC is...

    Thinking of going to Apple

Generally an OEM version that came with a new laptop as a backup will allow one installation. I just loaded an OEM XP Pro disk from a work laptop onto my new MB Pro with Parallels. No problem. It's worth a try. Also, if you've used it once alrady, Microsoft will generally authorize a second...

    The Beast for Biz-pics

Cadman, I spent some time considering this as I wanted to add something in the 17-28 range. My local camera shop loaned me their demo 17-55 for a couple of days. It was a great lens and very sound optically, but I decided that I would purchase the 17-35 instead. I did miss the 55-70 range...

    The Beast for Biz-pics

Frank, No problem. My issue with my older copy was that it was persistent across all f stops and unfortunatley it wasn't always a 15 second job to clean up. Actually, I've had a hard time cleaning it up in shots with significant detail. For example, it appeared as a blue shift aound dark...

    The Beast for Biz-pics

Bearmont, The only lens I have that is completely clean is the 70-200. Also, surprisingly my old 24-120 (non-AFS) lens is pretty clean except for the edges that show slight CA. That lens gets panned routinely as low quality...mine is somewhat soft as well. Another lens that I found quite...

    The Beast for Biz-pics

Hi Frank, I judge most photos by the print and unfortunatley my original copy of the 28-70 had such bad CA that it was apparent on the print. The photos I mentioned in your post are not 100% crops, I believe, and show CA. My guess is that it would show on a print. Personally, I can live with a...

    The Beast for Biz-pics

Is it my eyes or does shot #5 show quite a bit of CA in the lower right corner and on the highlights of the wrist watch band in #7? My version also shows CA at f2.8, but it's clean by f4. I had a version of this lens that had terrible CA throughout the f range, but Nikon replaced it. I quess I'm...

    Buy the 17-35?

Well in the midst of a 10" snowstorm...I trekked to the mall camera store that wanted to unload it and it now has a home. I laughed when the young camera clerk told me they though they'd never unload that expensive lens. Then he asked if I wanted to buy some generic filter to protect it. I told...

    Buy the 17-35?

Woody, I've heard it described as a "jewel", but I'm wodering if I wouldn't be better off buying the 17-55 and retiring the 28-70. My biggest concern with the 17-55 is it seems softer than the 28-70 and has a bit more CA that I like to see in a "pro" lens. Paul

    Buy the 17-35?

Hi folks, I wanted to get some advice. I have the chance to buy a 17-35 f2.8 at a clearance price (around $1,300), but I'm unsure. I currently have the 28-70, 70-200, 80-400, 50 f1.4, and Sigma 20 f1.8 for my D200 and D2h. My shooting covers every thing from indoor sports to landscape to...

same here I sent my D200 in for banding and focus problems. It came back in seven days with all problems addressed and they replaced my bottom plate, which had a crack in it. All no charge. Also sent in my 28-70 lens a fews weeks ago for a stuck aperature and CA that I've noticed with the...

    D200 Blooming

I've noticed that in highlight to dark transitions, my D200 is blooming. It's not CA since it's virtually identical with both the 70-200 and 28-70 2.8 lenses. I never saw that on my D2H, is it common with the D200 or do I have a problem:Sad:
