    New Sigma A 50/1.4

    US $949 UK £849.99 I don't think much of the UK price. $949 = £567. Add 20% tax, and that's £680. £850 is ridiculous.

Tethering a Nikon to a laptop, and saving image on memory card

And that's free isn't it? Thanks, I'll give it a go. I've tried TetherPro, which is good, and fair value at $25, but I'll try another free program first.

Tethering a Nikon to a laptop, and saving image on memory card

It wouldn't save everything - it wouldn't save on the memory card if it was writing to the laptop. That has been my experience with using Lightroom or anything else to tether. The problems I had with that are: 1) I trust memory cards more than HDDs, and I wouldn't want a laptop failure to lose...

Tethering a Nikon to a laptop, and saving image on memory card

I'd always had trouble being able to view my images on a laptop as I took them, whilst saving those images on a memory card at the same time. I understood that this was not due to software limitations as it was possible with Canons, just not with Nikon. Well it seems you can do it. Am I the...

Which lens is best for portraits?

I'd like it to have a bit of light on the shoulders, just to lift them from the background. Only personal preference though, lovely lighting on his face. Love it.

    Nikkor 50mm 1.8G or Nikkor 50mm 1.4G?

If I had to go with one now, and stick with it, I think I'd go for the Sigma 1.4, ahead of the Nikon 1.8G. But I'm sure the new 50mm Art will be wonderful, so I'll try and stick with my 1.8D until it's out.

    Nikkor 50mm 1.8G or Nikkor 50mm 1.4G?

And soon there'll be the Sigma 1.4 Art, which could be nice.

    Nikkor 50mm 1.8G or Nikkor 50mm 1.4G?

Bump! I'd like to upgrade my 1.8D, and these are obviously two of the contenders. But what about the 1.4 Sigma? The Nikon 1.4G is said to be a little soft wide open, which the Sigma is not - could that be a better choice? (Sigma is soft in the corners wide open, but I don't care for the...

How can I stop the D800 firing pre-flashes?

You sir, are a genius and I love you. We're going to overlook the fact that I'm an idiot. Red eye, honestly. Never used it (on purpose), never will.

How can I stop the D800 firing pre-flashes?

As far as I can tell, I have the same settings on my D700 as my D800. With an SB800 attached in TTL mode, the D700 fires a quick preflash (for exposure) and then immediately takes the shot. If I use a function button for FV Lock, then I can get the D700 to fire a pre flash when I want, and then...

How much memory would the D800 like your PC to have?

A few people have posted what they do, so I'm not sure if you're asking me specifically. I mostly use Lightroom, so yes, lots of files are open at the same time. Previews are loaded etc. You only work (go into the develop module) on one at a time, but you flick between images when choosing...

    D800 and Eye-Fi

Yes it sounds good. I didn't understand the post too well: "cutting an odd multiple of 3.12cm(1/4 wavelength at 2.4Ghz) length of metalized tape...A reasonable total length would be the 3/4 wavelength of 2.4ghz or 9.37cm long" I'm not sure how you make it 9.37cm long - no point cutting them at...

    D800 and Eye-Fi

Thank you SWLD. I'd read most of that before (on Eye-Fi site etc), but the extra bit about why it's sometimes working and other times not is useful. I had read that it wasn't working in direct mode, but was working with Wi-Fi, but also noticed the D800 was no longer listed as supported, so...

How much memory would the D800 like your PC to have?

I didn't think the graphics card was used much, as we're not talking about games, just passing a 2d image to the screen. I have win7 on an SSD. As above, are you sure? I have a decent GC anyway, an AMD 6970, but I don't think it's needed. Although it's mostly just Lr4, I want to be able to use...

    D800 and Eye-Fi

So we had a D700, and looked forwarded to Eye-Fi in CF form. But alas, it never happened. Imagine the excitement when we found our D800 would have both CF and SD slots, and work with Eye-Fi. But no, we've been let down again. The D800 is 'special' and doesn't work properly with the Eye-Fi in...

How much memory would the D800 like your PC to have?

I've got an i7 with 6gb of memory (win7 64, Lr4), and I'm planning to upgrade the memory to help with my D800 files. How much do you think the D800 would like, is there any point in getting more than 12gb? Thanks

Likewise, I couldn't use a mac if I wanted to. It can't run the software that Windows can, and that closed nature makes it more stable.

    Talk me into/out of a D800?

I don't think it does nearly as well, I think it's better. But not enough for you to need it over a D700 for pictures of your daughters dancing.
  33. T

    Talk me into/out of a D800?

This is a hobby right? So you don't need a D800, and you can't afford it (at the moment your priorities are elsewhere) without selling the 24-70. So stay as you are. If/when you get a D800, you'll want a 24-70 for it anyway. You may need to budget for Lr4 as well.

    PC Vs Mac

Indeed I understand self-build isn't for most, but there are companies like overclockers.co.uk that will make a proper pc for you (decent psu etc, the stuff that the big brands skimp on) and install Win correctly, and it's cheap. Yes, although I'm a PC fan I don't recommend buying from the big...

    PC Vs Mac

Or build your own PC. Or buy from a decent pC builder. You don't have to buy from the companies that shove rubbish on, and even if you do, installing an OS from scratch is hardly difficult.
  36. T

    PC Vs Mac

Both are capable, the answer for you depends on several things. A simplification: Budget: PC is cheaper for the same speed and screen quality Do you want to build it: If so, building and customising suits PC use more, like adding extra drives etc. You can get PCs built for you, but the non...

    D800 File Sizes

No he doesn't, he disagrees with you completely. You say that to get all the data with D300, you have to shoot uncompressed, because you lose a tiny bit with compression. Thom says that the D300 offers lossless compression, with no loss whatsoever. Exactly, on the D7000, D300 and above, we...

Matching white balance from Lightroom to web google chrome?

I'm still working on this, making sure I understand all of this: http://www.gballard.net/psd/go_live_page_profile/embeddedJPEGprofiles.html and the differences between how my browsers handle the images, and I thought I'd revisit your point: I've set firefox back to the default settings, and gone...

Matching white balance from Lightroom to web google chrome?

If that's possibly, yes please. Likewise Lightroom jpeg export just asks you for an image format (jpeg) and colour space (sRGB) - you don't seem to choose whether it's an attached profile or conversion. Happy to do either if I can find out what's wrong. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Matching white balance from Lightroom to web google chrome?

Not for me it wasn't. I just downloaded and installed firefox 13, went on here and looked at a picture, and the colour was identical to my chrome browser. Neither matched lightroom. I followed the advice in this link and the colour changed to match lightroom and it now passed the tests on the...

Matching white balance from Lightroom to web google chrome?

Wow, thank you very much for the help. Oh  I just googled it an found a method where you add '-enable-color-management' to the end of the target string in your shortcut to chrome, but it's made no difference. Done, and (with help from your last link) perfect. So Firefox isn't colour...

    D800/E Video Thread

Brilliant, thanks EDIT - although saying that, what is he on about with ISOs? He says to avoid 125 and multiplications of it, like 250, 500, 1000 (is that just for Canon?) He then says good ones to use are 160, 320, 640, 1250 and 2500 - er, those last two are multiplications of 125?

    D800 Screen protector?

Indeed that would be a poor use. The idea is that it doesn't make the screen harder to use or see (keeps grease off more easily) and also protects from a nasty scratch. What! These cameras already have a protector on and we've all missed it? That would put a different slant on it all.
