    D850 & 200-500mm AF Tune

Having read Steve Perry's three e-books and seen many of his videos, I find him to be a wealth of great advice. The point he makes regarding fine tuning each lens to each body resounds strongly with me. Paraphrasing, he says that as long as you've gone to the expense of acquiring good equipment...

    D850 & 200-500mm AF Tune

FWIW, I am in favor of AF fine tuning DSLRs. Not that I enjoy the tedious task, but I do think it can make a noticeable difference in sharpness if any mirror or sensor imperfections are present. The practice of AF fine tuning also helps you discover if any misalignments should arise over time...

Nikon 200-500 or Sony 200-600 for my needs?

Yes, I suppose it's not worth the churn. It certainly does seem promising that Sony is so committed to competing in this market though. If Nikon plans to survive, they'll have to bring equal or better mirrorless glass to the market and improve the Z system's AF capability.

Nikon 200-500 or Sony 200-600 for my needs?

@Amin Sabet if I were in your position, I'd be inclined to try the 200-600 over the 200-500. Assuming the in-depth reviews are as good as the initial YouTubers have found it, the 200-600 looks to be a good bet. I think a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 or f/4E on the 810 plus the 200-600 on the A9 would be...

D2x - been gifted one, some advice on lenses please

I enjoyed faffing around with Nikon D series glass on the E-M1, especially the AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8D ED-IF. But in the end, it was just a diversion. That old lens served me very well on Nikon bodies, and did indeed adapt just fine to the E-M1, but when the AF motor started to act up, I replaced...

    Question about APS repairs

It appears that APS did a fine job making the necessary physical adjustments to the mirror, AF sensor, and lens mount on my D500. I calibrated one zoom (a 70-200) and four primes (35, 50, 85, 300) on the freshly repaired body using Reikan FoCal. For every lens, a single-digit AF fine tune...

    AF Calibration (no longer needed?)

I love mirrorless. Awhile ago, my D500 was starting to back focus to the point where it had started to wander out of the adjustable range of AF fine tune values for some of my lenses, so I took it to APS for service. I thought this forum might be interested in the before/after results of a DSLR...

    Question about APS repairs

I certainly hope all turns out well with your family member. Broken cameras are, by comparison, a very small problem indeed. In answer to your question, my D500 was requiring AF fine tuning near, and for one of my lenses, beyond the -20 limit.

    500PF vs 400mm 2.8 with TC1.4 III

I downloaded the OP's files and pixel peeped them. The 500PF still holds up in a comparison of f/5.6 shots, but of course there's no substitute for f/2.8, as your images plainly illustrate. Very nice!

    Question about APS repairs

I just picked up my D500 from APS and it also still has firmware 1.15. While I share your concern that they itemized firmware as one of the services to be rendered but failed to do so, my reason for having them work on it was to calibrate the AF sensor. I'll post again after I put the body...

    500PF vs 400mm 2.8 with TC1.4 III

@Woollybugger are you considering retiring the 400mm? Just curious because I had been thinking of purchasing a used D before settling on the smaller/lighter (but slower) 500.

    500PF vs 400mm 2.8 with TC1.4 III

All five are quite sharp and contrasty when viewed to fit the screen. Even zooming in reveals no clear winner between the two. If you're making the point that the 500PF is a great value, I'm already convinced. In fact, I ordered one from B&H earlier today.

    Question about APS repairs

I actually just dropped off a body and lens at APS on Tuesday this week. This is my first time using them. D500 AF Question

Ken, I have noticed the same thing on the D500 and it is a nuisance when you’re trying to be precise (when are we not!?) I also noticed that the D750, E-M1, Z6 and Z7 focus points are located very precisely. With the last three being mirrorless, I imagine that is to be expected. With the D750...
