    P&S recommendations for auto-everything use

Have you ever looked at the Panasonic Lumix FZ series ( think the FZ8 is the latest incarnation ) ? A while ago, a relative of mine needed a slightly larger than normal P&S with longish reach, and we ended up with an FZ7. Due to its small sensor size, it is obviously going to be noisy...

    Anyone with a D40

I have read a few posts on the D40, so there are some here .. Looks like the search tool thinks 3 letter words are too short to search for - it finds no posts for the D50 either ! My wife has a D40, with the 18-55 and 55-200mm. For their price point, I am impressed with the image...

What's your opinion of the 70-300G

I quite liked mine ... Its pretty respectable up to 200mm, and for its price could be a whole lot worse at 300mm One of its redeeming features, in terms of carrying it on hikes , is its weight. It is *very* light ... At 1/3 of the cost of a VR, I still think it was a bargain ...

    Lens advise

Yvette  I *Really* didn't mean to put you off the Close Up Lens idea, as they really do have a place, and they are a very cost effective route to pseudo-macro . Its just that if I am in a muddy forest, and see a pretty fungi or flower, I have to start juggling filters without any...

    Lens advise

The 5T is a +1.5 Dipoter, and the 6T is a +2.9 Diopter. Basically, without going into optical theory ( which I am not qualified to do !), this means that the 5T has less effective magnification than the 6T. This makes the 5T a lot easier to use as the magnification is less, if that makes...

    Lens advise

Yvette to give an idea of of close focusing ability when using a close up lens with a 70-300 VR For reference, the African Violet flower is about 1" across, and these are un-cropped captures. Left hand side - closest focus distance for a 70-300mm is approx 45" @ 300mm Right...

How do you keep up with posts?

I had that problem, and probably appeared rude because of it  "new posts" seems to filter out threads you have started yourself, so its very easy to miss a helpful response ... However, there is a solution  If via User Control Panel->Options->Default Thread...

Why am I not as sharp as everyone else?

Chris You should be fine with Elements 4... Try USM ( Filter->Sharpen->Unsharp Mask) with a 1st try at 75% amount, Radius 1, Threshold 0. This comes out pretty near what Simon achieved with different SW. Tweak until you are happy :)

    Missing EXIF Data Rant

An important point, Manny. Taking Flickr ( what I use ) as an example, only the original file size link shows linked EXIF. And to get access to this link officially, you have to be a paying member ( rather than a freeloader like me). Sometimes, its preferable to link to a smaller image size...

VR lenses when "parked" - feel / hear internal movement ?

Mike - thanks for the posts. FYi - I am not in the habit of shaking the lens for fun  Its just whilst I was carrying it around mounted ( and powered off) , I could very occassionly feel "movement", and wondered what it was. Further investigation showed the lens as the culprit. At...

VR lenses when "parked" - feel / hear internal movement ?

OK - this might be dumb, but ... When a VR lens is off camera ( and hence no power applied), is it normal to feel / hear movement of something internal to the lens if you *gently" move the lens from side to side ? I am *not* talking about a rattle as such - more like someting sliding...
