Bill, I'm considering an S90. I noticed that the demo camera had a very loose control wheel. Is this a big problem when out and about shooting? Does it result in inadvertent adjustments of ISO, or exposure compensation? The demo camera in Best Buy is so hard to get a sense of ergonomics...

Cliff, When hiking solo, water is the main problem. The Mini-Trekker is a gear-centric bag, and doesn't have a lot of room for non-photo stuff. I also have a great day pack, but I don't have a good solution for carrying photo gear in it. Maybe I should just consider dropping a top-loader...

When I last went to DC, I rented a tripod from Penn Camera while I was there. It was a heavy Manfrotto, but got the job done for not a lot of money. Penn Camera is about 2 blocks from the Navy Memorial. - Jim

This camera is quite interesting to me. I went dSLR for image quality, but sometimes I don't take the camera with me because it is bulky. (See recent thread about my trip to NYC where I brought my P&S instead.) I'm not saying that I'm going to sell all my Nikon gear and go Micro Four Thirds...

I have. The people selling camera gear on Craig's List here have unreasonably high asking prices. When I went to look again, I no longer see used ones at B&H. KEH is getting about $600 for EX+ D80 body only. (And I don't have to sell it... keeping making photographs is an option. But...

Frank, The nifty 50 is great, but a bit long as a general purpose lens on DX. If I can get a 35 I'll probably bring both, otherwise may fall back to the P&S.

I was hoping to pick up a 35 f/1.8 today at lunch, but they appear to be hard to come by. So unless one should magically appear :-), my lens choice is 50 f/1.8, or 18-70 f/3.5-4.5, or fall back to the Canon P&S.

Exactly my point. I could (did) let myself get talked into the extra $ for the SB-800, but I can't justify it for the SB-900. (Also, the 900 seems significantly larger, maybe too large, but I'd use one to be certain.)

So the SB-800 is now officially discontinued. This is unfortunate - even with the SB-900 it sat at a nice price/performance point. Now if I need a second flash I'll probably settle for the SB-600, unless 900 prices drop appreciably in light of the discontinuation of the 800.

Where have you seen the Nikon 12-24 for as little as $150-200 more than the sigma? It appears to be, at best, about $300 more new.
