OM-D E-M5: To grip, or not to grip?

I bought an E-M5 in January, and just sold off the last bits of my Nikon kit. I'm really enjoying this camera. I was able to get the HLD-6 from my local camera shop on sale last weekend. (Turned out it's still cheaper at Amazon, but I like to support the local camera shop so they stay...

Lens pouches for Olympus µ 4/3 lenses?

All (OK, most) of my Nikon lenses shipped with both a hood and a pouch. Those were the days. (Seriously, an $800 lens should come with a hood and a pouch.) Now that I'm building up a µ*4/3 kit, I miss the pouches. I didn't use them all the time, but they did come in handy depending on what...

Advice for building an initial OM-D E-M5 kit in light of current rebates?

Thanks for the advice. I picked up my kit last weekend—now I need to free up some time to use it. (I ended up with the 12-50, 12 f/2, and 45 f/1.8 to start.) —Jim

Advice for building an initial OM-D E-M5 kit in light of current rebates?

There are murmurs of a new Oly lens soon, but who knows what it will be, and when it might actually ship. Are you shooting with the Panasonic 25 now?

Advice for building an initial OM-D E-M5 kit in light of current rebates?

I've been thinking about downsizing my kit for awhile for many of the same reasons as others here. I rented an OM-D E-M5 with the 12-50 kit lens and the 12 f/2 over the holiday break. I enjoyed it. Tthe $100 instant rebate is back on the E-M5. But the bigger twist is the $150 mail-in...

    Canon S90 thoughts......afield and afar

Bill, I'm considering an S90. I noticed that the demo camera had a very loose control wheel. Is this a big problem when out and about shooting? Does it result in inadvertent adjustments of ISO, or exposure compensation? The demo camera in Best Buy is so hard to get a sense of ergonomics...

I wish Nikon would produce a PS like the Samsung EX1

I agree completely. With a P&S, you aren't buying into a system, so buy whichever model is the right one at the time. Brand doesn't matter so much. — Jim

Do you think Nikon will ever again make a higher-end compact?

Why? As much as I love my Nikon SLR, with a P&S you aren't buying into a system, so I buy whichever particular model suits my needs/wants/pricepoint at the time, and don't worry about which brand it is. In the past, I've always gravitated towards Canon for P&S cameras. — Jim

    Carrying gear while hiking?

Cliff, When hiking solo, water is the main problem. The Mini-Trekker is a gear-centric bag, and doesn't have a lot of room for non-photo stuff. I also have a great day pack, but I don't have a good solution for carrying photo gear in it. Maybe I should just consider dropping a top-loader...

What do you all use to carry gear while on a day hike? I suffer from the best camera is the one you have with you, and I tend to leave my dSLR at home. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimcorreia/3898725540/ When I took this picture, we were going on a family day hike with the dog, and I...

    Tripod for vacation pictures?

When I last went to DC, I rented a tripod from Penn Camera while I was there. It was a heavy Manfrotto, but got the job done for not a lot of money. Penn Camera is about 2 blocks from the Navy Memorial. - Jim

It sure is. (You can check B&H, for example, yourself.) The Sigma 12-24 covers an FX image circle.

    My UWA lens debate.

So converted to inches, we are talking ~12 inches (0.3m) vs ~9.5 inches (0.25m) to take you from awful to not bad. 2 1/2 inches of subject distances really matters that much? (I don't currently have a UWA lens - I rented one for a trip but used it mostly for architecture, and not having a lot...

Are you guys following the olympus EP-1 threads in dpr?

This camera is quite interesting to me. I went dSLR for image quality, but sometimes I don't take the camera with me because it is bulky. (See recent thread about my trip to NYC where I brought my P&S instead.) I'm not saying that I'm going to sell all my Nikon gear and go Micro Four Thirds...

    35mm f1.8 in stock at B&H

Fair price for Nikon D80 kit?

I have. The people selling camera gear on Craig's List here have unreasonably high asking prices. When I went to look again, I no longer see used ones at B&H. KEH is getting about $600 for EX+ D80 body only. (And I don't have to sell it... keeping making photographs is an option. But...

    Price jump on flashes?

I remember reading that, repeatedly, but I hadn't noticed it on anything I was looking at until now. (Bodies have still been going for good prices.) Shooting Nikon Speedlight has gotten expensive :-). The SB-800 is gone, replaced by the bigger, more featureful, and more expensive Sb-900...

Fair price for Nikon D80 kit?

I've got someone local has commented at more than one gathering that I should sell her my camera. Price jump on flashes?

This probably happened awhile ago, when I wasn't paying attention... The new price for SB-600 seems to have gone up about $40 from the last time I checked. Just a re-alignment of prices based on this years exchange rates? A side effect of the SB-800 being discontinued?

Packing light for weekend in NYC?

So despite advice to the contrary, I ended up taking my P&S to the city. +1 for not feeling like I was lugging too much camera around. -1 for feeling like I didn't have enough camera with me. (My P&S only goes to 35mm equiv. wide, and isn't terribly good for low light/flash shots.)...

Packing light for weekend in NYC?

Fortunately for the credit cards, B&H is closed on Saturday :-) Still undecided about the camera. Since I couldn't find a 35 f/1.8 today, it is really down to the D80 and 18-70, or the A620. While there is nothing wrong with that combo, I'm not sure it justifies the extra bulk over the...

Packing light for weekend in NYC?

Frank, The nifty 50 is great, but a bit long as a general purpose lens on DX. If I can get a 35 I'll probably bring both, otherwise may fall back to the P&S.

Packing light for weekend in NYC?

I was hoping to pick up a 35 f/1.8 today at lunch, but they appear to be hard to come by. So unless one should magically appear :-), my lens choice is 50 f/1.8, or 18-70 f/3.5-4.5, or fall back to the Canon P&S.

    Auto ISO or No?

I haven't run into this, but my biggest use of it has been shooting dance recitals. I haven't quote grokked what Auto ISO is doing to do when shooting with the flash, so I do leave it off then. (Once I have time to experiment and understand how it is behaving, I may use it if is beneficial...

    Auto ISO or No?

My D80 can get noisy too. But noise is better than motion blur. Auto-ISO is handy when I'm shooting my daughter dancing - lighting can vary quit a bit from number to number, and across different parts of the stage. I wish the D80's auto iso had more exposure flexibility, but it doesn't. (I...

    CitiCards sharp rate increase

The NY Times article mentioned the figures of 20% of customers, and an average 2-3% increase. Your card, mine, and my wife's both got a 7% increase. We must be the outliers... :-) I don't currently carry a balance either, but I'm still aghast at the overnight doubling of my rate...

    CitiCards sharp rate increase

The NY Times article mentioned an average rate increase of 2-3%. It didn't say they were really going to stick it to their low-risk customers, but apparently that was the plan. Even when I don't carry a balance, banks are still making money on transaction fees. Raising rates and reducing...

    Showcase Sigma 30mm f/1.4

I think you mean "It is better to be safe than sorry." Safe then sorry is the worst of both worlds :-) From a practical point of view, the lens you have and make images with today is better than the lens you have for images you might make in the future with a body you don't have. To that end...

New lens (Sigma 30 f/1.4) or new compact?

I have no urge to jump on the FX bandwagon right now. When/if FX bodies come down in price, I'll see what's available at the time, and re-evaluate my decision. (I never shot a 35mm film SLR, so I have no particular affinity for the FX format; as long as DX meets my needs I'm happy to keep...

New lens (Sigma 30 f/1.4) or new compact?

Currently I have 18-70, 70-300 VR, and 50 f/1.8. My long term wish list includes an ultra-wide angle zoom, and constant f/2.8 mid-range and telephoto. (But none of those are likely short term - i.e. between now and the end of the holidays - purchases.)

New lens (Sigma 30 f/1.4) or new compact?

So my family gave me some cash for my birthday with the intention that I'd use it for something for myself, presumably photography related. I've been eyeing the Sigma 30 for awhile. Kicking in some matching funds, I could pick this up and put it to good use as my candid/snapshot lens. (I'd mount...

    SB-800 discontinued

Best Buy was clearing them out as a "deleted item" recently. Thom Hogan says the SB-800 was officially discontinued on the 7th. http://www.bythom.com/
  46. J

    SB-800 discontinued

Exactly my point. I could (did) let myself get talked into the extra $ for the SB-800, but I can't justify it for the SB-900. (Also, the 900 seems significantly larger, maybe too large, but I'd use one to be certain.)
  47. J

    SB-800 discontinued

So the SB-800 is now officially discontinued. This is unfortunate - even with the SB-900 it sat at a nice price/performance point. Now if I need a second flash I'll probably settle for the SB-600, unless 900 prices drop appreciably in light of the discontinuation of the 800.

    Thoughts on used lens pricing?

I have my own biases, but I'm curious what others think about the issue of used lens pricing. I've been watching the For Sale forum. To that end, the market sets the price for used lenses. For popular lenses it is possible to get a sense of the market value there. (Though it isn't entirely...
