    300 2.8 AFS-II v. 300 2.8 VR

I bought a demo model of the AFS-II. They are pretty much the same except VR and Nano coating. I saved $1,000 also and glad I did. The AFS-II is tack sharp and fast focusing. It also works great with the 1.7x converter. You'll enjoy either one.

    Nikon AF-S 300mm f2.8 with TC1.7x or Sigma 500mm f4.5???

Quan. I just bought a demo Nikon 300mm F2.8 AFS-II. I use it with the 1.7x and it's an AMAZING combo. I used to have the 300mm F4. This new combo is in another league. Don't bother with the Sigma, get the 300mm, I promise you won't regret it. Fast focusing and tracking, really sharp and this is...

    Taking flight

Arnie, I really like the 1.7 over the 1.4. More reach, very sharp and really compliments the 300 F4. It auto focuses fine on the D300, but it will hunt a little. Once it focuses on a BIF, it really locks on. Again, a great combo.
