Different colour? It could be due to auto white balance variance between the 2 shots, or perhaps even different exposure. As for the lines, it could be due to sensor banding issue on your DSLR.

I have the old 55 f3.5 micro. The magnification ratio is 1:2 without any extension rings. I hope you realize both the 55 f2.8 and 3.5 are AI lens, they are manual focus. The 50 f1.4 is no macro lens but you can easily (and cheaply) buy the extension tubes to lower the minimum focus distance...

The funny thing is...the 35 f1.8 is a DX lens that actually works rather nicely albeit the slight vignetting on FX.

I finally received a call from my dealer, picked up the 2nd unit. Did some test, focus seems spot on. I didn't have much time to give the lens a thorough workout, but here's 4 of them.

Oh wow. It's so sharp wide open! I am getting interested in this lens more and more! This should shut up those web critics who didn't even have this lens and panned/moaned/whined about it being soft wide open, not f2.8 etc!

Since it is manual focus, and it's a bit soft at least until further testing debunk that, why not just return it and get other lens?

I'm still awaiting a 2nd unit from my shop. I am getting all jittery from looking at all the photos taken with this lens. This is shot by someone I know from another forum. He absolutely loves this lens, and have no AF issues with it on his D3. And yes, he is not making my wait for my 24 any...

I tested on the D700. A friend of mine who have this lens told me that he suffered FF from only close distance, say 5-30cm from the lens. But if he uses AF-C instead of AF-S, the focus would be spot on. Another friend of mine who uses D3s reported no problems and he loves this prime, went...

I went to my usual shop to collect my 24 today, but I went home empty handed. I took over 50 test shots, and all seemed to be front focusing at short distances. Viewing the photos at home on my LCD screen makes the FF very obvious. Could be my bad technique, could be the "reports" of front...

Interesting..if I had shoot no. 1 like you did, I would get flare. I think it is due to the cheap UV filter that I slapped in front for protection.

Ahhh...this has been an old issue. As you get to macro distances, you will see your F stop increase. The size of the aperture opening remains the same, but the amount of light coming in decreases due to the proximity of the subject etc etc....physics...go figure. Thus the lens will report...

What do you plan to shoot? AFS 60 f2.8 might be a wee bit too short to shoot jumpy insects, but I have seen many photogs who were able to do that with this lens. Must be ninjas... AFS 85 f3.5 VR might not be that great if you want to shoot portraits, the slower aperture might not give you...

Thanks Alan, I love the selective focus ability of the 24 f1.4, but I just keep on hearing negative things about the AF speed and accuracy. Does it mean that if you stop down to f2.8, you would be able to AF accurately of the cyclist compared to shooting wide open due to the bigger DOF?

Alan, Would the 14-24 be able to get faster/accurate AF compared to the 24 f1.4 had you used it in such situation?

Nikon doesn't make any extension tubes that will work with the AFS lens, while Kenko does. Nikon current extension tubes will only work with AF lens. I am using Kenko extension tubes with the FAT 105 f2.8 VR, and yes, it bends a bit if you use all 3 tubes. But I seldom use all 3 tubes, just...

I have used 50 f1.8, 50 f1.4D, Sigma 50 f1.4, Nikon 50 f1.4G, and recently 50 f1.2 AiS. I owned 50 f1.8 and Sig 50 before ending up with 50G (the rest are borrowed from friends) I still miss the Sig 50's bokeh and sharpness near wide open but the 50G is no slouch either. AF wise...I feel...

The best way to shoot macro is not to fiddle with the focus ring until you get the "in focus" dot. Do the macro shuffle! Set you focus to the magnification that you want, say 1:2, on the lens. Slowly move your whole body towards or away from the subject, until you get sharp focus...
