    Another Polaroid

Nice pics, near my hometown. When we were children, we would play in the old train cars, notably the caboose. My great-grandfather was an engineer for the Santa-Fe railroad, and I spent a lot of time around trains when I was small. It was a sad day when they demolished the old station and it's...

Local Brick n' Mortar Store Has An S3 (Not The Millenium)

The S3 is a great camera, the 50/2 is a great lens. The S3 is a smooth and silent camera, more so than a Leica M if the S3 is in decent shape. It also has a 1 to 1 viewfinder with frame lines for 35mm to 135mm lenses. The S3 was my first Nikon rangefinder camera, and it was lovely to shoot with...

    Fuji X100T

Here are a couple from last night as I was walking home, and a couple from this morning when I was walking the dog, It is cherry blossom season in Japan, and Tokyo is finally seeing some nice warm weather. The X100T is a lot of fun to use, small, light, and fast. The autofocus is...

    Fuji X100T

A few years ago I lusted after the X100 when it was released, but when the X-Pro 1 came out, I ended up opting for it instead. The X-Pro was an incredible camera, very light, easy to use, and capable of taking incredible pictures. I eventually acquired the 35/1.4, 28/2, and 14/2.8 lenses for it...

    Nikon F series

I like the F3T because I can use a cable release on in. The other F3 bodies are Press models, which have weatherproofed shutter buttons, so no cable release, though you can add an electronic release to the motor drives. I also have an F2 T, this is perhaps the only camera I will never sell.

    Looking for a backpack

Ditto on the Thinktank bags. I have a Thinktank Shapeshifter backpack, which I love. I can also fit it with a proper waist strap so as to carry most of the weight on my hips instead of my shoulders (something I learned in the Infantry).

A few of my Nikons, I collect old newspaper photographer's cameras, as well as some which are less used.

    Camera F's

I also love the F. I have three F cameras, a couple of F2's, and three F3P cameras. But I prefer the old rangefinders, mainly the S3 and SP, I now have a pair of each.

Tip's for using Apeture Priority Fuction

The meter in the F3 is center-weighted, meaning that it will measure the light visible in the center of the scene. If the center of your subject is darker than the rest, your picture will be over exposed. If the center of your subject is bright, your picture will be under exposed. This can be a...

What film cameras are you shooting this summer?

I have been enjoying shooting with old Nikon film cameras this summer. This old F3 recently followed me home, and I have been having a lot of fun with it. I'll post some images after I get the flm processed. What film cameras have you been using?

Looking for bicycle recommendations - Update: got it and here it is!

Cycling is a very pleasurable activity, and is much more fun and convenient than running or swimming. On a bicycle you can get a good workout and cover great distances, and adjust your pace to either get good exercise, or simply enjoy the scenery. Getting started properly is difficult, and...

Looking for bicycle recommendations - Update: got it and here it is!

I used to do a lot of riding, I was an amateur racer some years ago. I did as many as five hours a day of hard riding, and usually rode about 500km per week. Racing made me an endorphine junky, and even on days when I was so sore that I could barely lift my leg over the saddle, I couldn't wait...

We're taking more pictures than ever ... so why are cameras dying off?

The cell phone has had an effect, I have actually gotten very good feedback on a few photos I have posted in other places, and have been asked what kind of camera and lens I was using. The camera was my iPhone, and the lens is whatever lens comes in an iPhone. Also, the medium used to share...

    Converted Speed Graphic

I have recently set up a Super Graphic with a Mamiya Sekor 100mm f2.8 lens. The lens does not cover 4x5, but it works fine if I use a PA145 back and FP100C or B film. Luckily these films are still easy to find in Japan. I would like to find a cam for the Super Graphic for the 100mm lens so I...

The Nikon SLR Serial Number/Date Thread.

I have two Nikon SP rangefinder bodies, one silver and the other black. The silver one is serial number 6213504, the black one is serial number 1824. The black one is essy to date because it is one of the 2005 limited production models. The silver SP is not so easy to date, and I have no idea...

What would you do if you won the Powerball jackpot?

For the U.S. International Travelers... Cell phone Question

You'll have to see if your carrier has a partnership with any European carriers. I used ATT mainly because I travel a lot, and they have many partner carriers in Europe and Asia. I also subscribe to an international roaming plan before taking a trip, that way the roaming rates are much less...

Anyone quit speeding "cold turkey?" Two week update

I began driving when I was 16 years old. I was a car nut who subscribed to Hot Rod magazine, and spent all of my extra cash trying to make my 1966 GTO just a little bit faster. I took auto shop in high school, and was a member of a car club. I loved to drive fast, and I would go to the street...

    Lenses Price in Japan

You won't find any deals on newer gear in Japan, in my experience goods here typically coat up to 1/3 than they would in America. If you are coming from Europe, the prices might be more attractive. The best deals in Japan tend to be for older and harder to find gear, especially for medium or...

    My Neighborhood on Film

After doing a lot of developing early this week (due to bad weather), I was sorting through the negatives, and thought I would share a few images of the area where I live. All of the shots were taken with my Nikon S3 Olympic, and either a 50mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/1.8 Nikkor lens. This is the...

    My Nikon Film Cameras

Yes, the F and the S3 are very similar, and many of the parts are interchangeable. The Olympic S3 was built after the original S3 had been discontinued, and used some parts from the F, such as the winding lever and titanium shutter. One of the interesting things about the Nikon rangefinders...

    My Nikon Film Cameras

I got my first Nikon more than 20 years ago, a Nikon FE. The FE was the first of many Nikon cameras I would own. I eventually got an FM, and FM2, FM3A, F3, F4, F100, and my only digital, a D300. I also owned and shot Nikon rangefinders, and have had the S, S2, S3, S4, and an SP. Of all the...

Ebay selling what to be aware of for a newbie

I have an eBay store, and I sell quite a few cameras there. I have been selling on eBay for a few years, and overall it has been profitable to me. When selling on eBay, or anywhere else, you can expect the occasional problem. Sometimes people commit to buy, but never pay. Others receive...

    I got the Leica blues

I found it easier to develop my film myself. I shoot a couple of digital cameras, but I find film much more enjoyable. I still haven't found digital to be as interesting to me as film, and though I like shooting my new X-Pro, I get more images out of my Leica or Rolleiflex. I like the lack...

Old Rollei at a Car Cruise

You can use the hood and filter at the same time. The bayonet hood attaches to the outside of the lens flange, while the hood attaches to the inside. I have a similar Rolleiflex, and I found a cheap Walz hood. Bay 1 hoods were commonly used and made by many manufacturers, and are not so hard to...

A message to graduates: "You are not special."

I remember my commencement speech from high school, it was not at all like this one at all. We were described as "special", and it also painted a rosy picture of our futures. Not much later I got to hear another speech, but in an entirely different tone, given by an entirely different type of...

    Which camera to buy?

The Minolta SRT is a great camera, and is a bargain for what it does. The Pentax Spotmatics are also solid little cameras. The Canon FTB is a great shooter, and it's FD lenses are a good value. There are many options to choose from, you should try playing with a few different cameras and see if...

    Fuji X-Pro 1 firmware v1.01 now available

Actually, my X-Pro was quite wonderful as it was, the upgrade is nice, but by no means essential. There were no "flaws" in my camera, though there are things which could stand improvement. But I have never used any camera which could have been improved in at least a few ways. At least Fuji have...

Can we talk about flatbed scanners?

I have been using an Epson 750 for a couple of years now, and I have been quite happy with it's performance. I bought the Epson because I shoot medium and large format film, as well as 35mm. The Epson does a great job on the 35mm stuff, bit it really shines on the bigger negatives. I do get...

    Professional B&W Developing

I usually use D76 to develop, plain water for a stop batch, and whatever fixer is available. I use Fuji photoflo, but Sunlight dishwashing soap will work in a pinch, and doesn't leave spots.

    Professional B&W Developing

You can find all the stuff you need on eBay quite cheaply. I paid about $50 for my kit, but it was a Jobo setup which can develop 4x5 film. A simple 35mm kit would be much less, perhaps $30 or so. You just need a developing tank and reel, a thermometer, and an egg timer. If you develop 5 or 6...

I am trying to catch up on my developing as I write. 10 rolls done, about 40 more to go... It's a slow process as my tank does only two rolls at a time. I'm fixing two rolls now, two more are drying in the shower, the scanner is scanning what I finished last night. But so far so good. I just...

    Older Leicas

My most recent M4, with my favorite lens attached. I found the camera at a used-camera shop a few months ago for the kingly sum of $200. It cost another $400 for a CLA and new shutter curtains, but it now looks and works like new.

Black & White film photography - questions

Developing your own film is probably the best way to get good results. You can get everything you need to do the job for about $70, including chemicals. The shopping list is rather short. You need a thermometer, a developing tank with reals, a couple of 1 or 2 liter bottles, and a measuring...

'Whoops! - Thought I Could Find A Used One Of These For Cheap'

I have a Nikon S3, with a 50/1.4 lens, and it is a great combination. It is small, quiet, and the winding action is buttery smooth. I also can't complain about the quality of the lens, the images I get from it are simply superb. My only complaint is the location of the shutter button, which is...

This is the Chuo line platform at Ochanomizu station in Tokyo. I've been on some crowded trains during my time here in Japan. Actually "crowded" is not the word, and sardines have more breathing room. You are waiting on a platform crowded with people, and the train arrives. It is completely...

    Joining the club

I don't care much for "collecting" cameras. I do love to find cameras which are in good condition, but I think it is more fun to use them than to place them on a shelf and merely look at them from time to time. A couple of acquaintances of mine were gun collectors who spent thousands of...
