    Cooking Lessons Suggestions Needed

Cooking is like photography; no matter how much reading you do, there is no substitute for actually doing it. That said - start simple with things you know you like (and how they taste). Until you get confident with what you can do, you'll never be able to figure out what you don't like about...

    camera focus when remote activated

Manual focus may be the easiest way to go. But you can also do a search on trap focus. I read an article on it about ten years ago, so some of what I remember is fuzzy! But you should be able to set the camera so the shutter is activated when the subject is in focus.

    I know why film died.

I think you are perhaps over-simplifying. Yes, it is about how much you can make - but that has to be balanced against how much you can charge. Many stores have gone under by trying to continue offering (expensive) customer support, while watching those same customers purchase elsewhere...

    Trivial things that annoy you.

The fact that the media tends to portray intelligent people as 'objects to be mocked,' instead regular people. I recognize the dramatic necessity of the tragic flaw, which is why I enjoy well-developed characters and shows such as; House, Sherlock Holmes or Endgame. But for the most part...

This might seem pedantic, but... A pendant is a hanging ornament. (I really couldn't resist.) :D

    Serial number question

Hawk is right, it's on the aperture ring. When the lens is mounted on a camera the serial number can be seen just a little lower than the lens release button. Look under good lighting and you should see it next to the lens mount.

    How Cold Is It?

Air temp today was -13C (about 9F), with a wind chill of -21C (about -6F). In keeping with the OP, it was so cold the teenagers did up their jackets! lol

My brother' heart stopped today -

I can sympathize - I had a similar situation last year. Can you delay telling your folks until he is out of the coma? It just seems simpler to do it that way, maybe set it up so your brother could call them after you tell them. It's a tough thing to do - deciding what and when to tell them...

    Best Prime for Photo Walk

Like others have suggested, I'd go with the 50. My personal choice for a walk around lens is the 60 macro. If you tend to like longer lenses, then I'd go with the 105 macro.

    Customer vs Fountain Pen

Rich, I agree with you about using a ball point, but for different reasons. I am right-handed, but tend to write fairly small. All through school, I wrote with a Parker fine tip - that being the only one that felt good in my hand plus had a tip that wouldn't clog up. In recent years, I've finely...

    Coffee maker time

Perhaps someone with a thermometer and a thermal carafe would be kind enough to boil some water and pour it in to see how much the temperature drops. Both into a cold, and a hot carafe. Using a Bunn style machine that keeps the water hot has two considerations: The machine is always on to...

The Evidence is Piling Up... Secret Terror Society.

I have my brother's Aristo-MultiLog (Aristo nr. 0970). He was an engineer. One day, I'll have to learn how to use it so I can pass it along to my nephew!

The Evidence is Piling Up... Secret Terror Society.

I have two slide rules, but I never had to use them in school. I do remember being taught how to use one, with the big one the school had that hung over the blackboard! @Monty - Nice HP's! I have two in front of me, HP25 and HP41CX.

Does anyone shoot in the rain?

The old standby used to be a plastic bag. Put the camera in the bag, bottom of the bag facing down so you can get your hands in the bag. Use a rubber band to hold the bag onto the viewfinder and cut an opening there so you can see clearly. Repeat for the lens (assuming your front element...

    Help for my wife??

Gordon Nova Scotia has a relatively mild climate, without large swings in temperature. Average summer temperatures would run in the mid to upper 20's (celcius), in the winter more like in the minus teens. The hottest times would probably be anywhere from the last week of July to the third...

Thinning out your library - KISS

I'm another one of those 'hang on to everything shooters.' The only things I have ever deleted are the totally useless shots. Just like from my film days, I'd rather have the shot to go back to, just in case. A great example of this was a couple of pictures I took last December of my brother...

    Man.I feel horrible.

Until you've had kidney stones, you don't know what pain can be! I had one a few years ago, and was able to pass it. Apparently the problem is that the tube from the kidney to the bladder narrows, so a stone can enter and then get stuck. One of the things they'll tell you to do after all this...

How many of you actually read ...

If it's something I'm interested in, and want to reply to, I read every response. If it's something I'm interested in, I'll read at least the first page (or two) before it goes off-topic. If it's just a link, I'll read the first few replies. Anything else is really hit and miss.

    Amy Winehouse found dead

It may be true that you make the initial choice, but once an addiction is established it is not longer a lifestyle choice. Addicts often struggle quite hard to overcome their addictions, and some never do manage to overcome them. Unless you, or a loved one has an addiction, it is difficult to...

Mystery spheres - what are they???

If you're interested in that kind of a show (mystery/puzzle solving), you may want to watch 'Endgame.' It's a Canadian show that has a Russian chess master (Arkady Balagan, played by Shawn Doyle) solving problems people bring to him, without leaving his hotel. Season one is wrapping up tonight...

    Wide angle composition

I find that used a focusing screen that has grid lines on it is a valuable tool. It helps me keep the camera level and avoid having skewed verticals and horizontals. If needed, it also helps place objects in the frame (rules of thirds, etc).

Mystery spheres - what are they???

Omarma and Growltiger are both right. There are two proofing steps - bench proof and pan proof. As stated, let it rise (bench proof) then punch it down and divide and shape in and place into pans. The second proof step is in the pan, before going in the oven. Times for proofing will vary...

It's not illegal, but you're being detained...

I agree with madecov - there is no advantage in being aggressive. I think the best attitude is to make it clear you are not a threat - by cooperating. If you don't act as if you have something to hide, it will be much easier.

    Not your Average Thread

I say keep your name. Mine is twelve letters long. I'm of Belgian descent, so I get mine misspelt and mispronounced all the time. It starts with a letter from the far end of the alphabet, so in school I was always near the end, and I was the last kid in my class who could spell his own name...

    What Aperture for Portraits?

David, The short answer is there are no rules. That said, what I would do is examine the DOF chart for your lens. Using a rough number of 10" for what you would want in focus (ie the face), see what aperture gives you enough DOF at the distance you will be working. It will change a little...

Batteries/Battery Holders for Old Motor Drive

I think I'm agreeing with John when I say the F2 with the MD2 looks cooler than it does with the MD3. Looking at mine (I have both) I wonder if the bottom plates of the drives can be exchanged, giving the MD3 a little needed bling! Since I tend to use the drives more as power winders (single...

Batteries/Battery Holders for Old Motor Drive

Interesting - I did not know that. I usually use a drive when I want to keep the camera to my eye (I'm left-eyed) and follow the action - usually using faster shutter speeds. And I keep my drives set for single-shot. It's been a while since I've shot an F2 with a drive attached, but won't...

Batteries/Battery Holders for Old Motor Drive

As a long time film user (35+ years), I agree that there is a lot of film gear available at good prices - but by using the same logic, there are deals to be had on digital gear too. I've found that, for me, shopping for digital required a little more thought about how, what and how much I...

Ideas for a Photography Class I will be teaching

Have you thought about a simple one-page handout for them to take? Something large-print, bullet-point style. Not to go in-depth about any one item, but as a kind of cheat-sheet they can refer to. I'm guessing the focus will be mainly on 'when to press the button,' rather than on any technical...

Buyer Beware - Barnes & Noble

I sort of thought that - but sometimes I can be (s)lightly dumb. Before deciding where to buy, I work out the prices (with tax, shipping, etc) to see how close they are. As a rough (personal) guideline, if the on-line price is more than 10% cheaper that's the way I go. I've bought...

Buyer Beware - Barnes & Noble

I wouldn't say you were a dumb shopper (your words), it's sometimes difficult to understand how much the price changes. It's a complicated retail landscape out there - lots of choices, almost too much selection unless you devote some research time to your purchases, and the possibilities of...

Buyer Beware - Barnes & Noble

It's nothing new. In the '70s I used to buy records through mail-order because it was cheaper, and better selection. People moved away from small stores in favor of 'big-box' stores because the prices were cheaper. Now people are moving to on-line ordering because it is cheaper. And, in both...

Camera neck strap: On or off?

I agree with Frits about using Domke straps, maybe it's a Canadian thing. lol I too keep my camera on my left shoulder, but lens out. I can reach down with my right hand and bring the camera to my eye. As my left hand comes up, it creates a loop around my left arm, the same as Frits looping...

    Is my D200 wearing out?

Have you tried to use the camera and flash since you got back home from the event? Some of the mistakes I've made have been setting the wrong flash synch or putting one (out of 8) battery in wrong. Most of the time I can trace my equipment troubles to user error rather than equipment failure...

What dream gear would you take on a dream assignment?

The only advice I could give would be based on 'what would I do?' So... I would take two bodies, either the two D3's or a D3 plus the D700. I've worked with two different bodies before (F2 and F5) and not had any problems - if you are confident that your shooting is fluid enough, that should...

    Monopod Issue - Recommendation

That's not hard use at all - I would have expected a longer solid working life than that. I have had some Manfrotto gear for many years and haven't had something like that happen. Have you looked at the choices available on the RRS site? Or through Kirk enterprises? Given the quality of work...

    Monopod Issue - Recommendation

Photographer sues over use of murdered girl's photo
