    The Milky Way

Nice images, Pete. Great first try! I notice that the stars, especially in the Big Dipper image exhibit coma (smearing). This occurs with fast lenses. I recommend you stop the lens down, to see if you can get sharper stars. At the same time, you can increase exposure time without risk of...

Everyone Please Read!! Our Good Friend, Uncle Frank, Mr. Nikon Cafe (to me)

Uncle Frank, like many others, we have never met in-person, but have exchanged many messages both here and on DPR. Because of your tutelage, I developed a good understanding of photography and composition, and you are the single, biggest influence on my education. I am very saddened to hear...

Awesome series! I had never really thought of going there.... until now. (Darn you, Alan!). You obviously had many fantastic photo ops.

    Alabama State Capitol

These are great! I especially like the first one, and the one of the stair case. I have never been there where the traffic cleared enough to get a clear shot of the front of the Capitol building.

The Bugma (Sigma 150 f/2.8 Macro EX DG HSM)

I have experimented a bit with the limit switch, and can say that it does help with more quickly attaining AF. I still need more practice to get a feel for where those ranges are, with respect to subject-to-lens distance, to fully optimize the capabilities of my lens.

The Bugma (Sigma 150 f/2.8 Macro EX DG HSM)

This is good info, Randy. The IQ is certainly excellent on the 150, and it is not as pricey as the Nikon. I also am really starting to appreciate lighter!

The Bugma (Sigma 150 f/2.8 Macro EX DG HSM)

I have tried TCs before (on other lenses), and they do get you much closer, and I have not noticed any significant decrease in IQ. Mainly they stop down the light, and focusing is a bit more of a challenge because of it. I have not yet tried any TCs on the Bugma, but this lens lets you get...

The Bugma (Sigma 150 f/2.8 Macro EX DG HSM)

Thanks for the comments, jt. As far as the autofocus, that is my observation with this particular copy of this lens. I am not implying that the AF is not good, it is just responds differently than my other lenses. I will try experimenting with the focus limiter to see how it affects the...

The Bugma (Sigma 150 f/2.8 Macro EX DG HSM)

Thanks, SkvLTD. I do like the longer working distance. Each lens and close up method (like tubes) has it's pros and cons. It is a matter of knowing what they are and working within the constraints.

The Bugma (Sigma 150 f/2.8 Macro EX DG HSM)

I bought the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 macro lens from the Marketplace forum late last year, and have not had much opportunity to use it until last week. I have to say that I only own one non-Nikon lens, and I was not sure how this lens would perform. To my eye, this lens has good color rendering and...

    Osprey guarding its nest

Hi Lyndee Lou. Thanks for commenting! HSV weather has been unseasonably cool this year. We had to head further south to the Gulf coast to warm up. The weather shows the trend continuing next week, although it will be drier, with highs getting to the low 70s. I have my fingers crossed we'll get...

    Osprey guarding its nest

While on a walk with my dogs in Gulf Shores, AL, I came upon an Osprey nest and a rather noisy Osprey who was guarding its nest. I thought this was an opportune target, and shot the bird using my D4 and 300mm f/2.8 AF-I. The sky was cloudy, making for a blown-out background. While this shot...

The 85 mm f/1.4 is definitely magical X Ray. While I don't usually use this particular lens, I am always pleased with the results.

    My dogs at 85mm

I have not been too active taking photos, recently, but decided I need some dog pictures. Here are a couple I just shot of our Wheaten Terriers with my 85mm f/1.4 on my D4. I added a vignette in PS (per my daughter's request). The dogs are overdue for haircuts! Hope you enjoy. Annabel (13...

    Orion Nebula (M42)

Hi, Steve. Thanks! There really is quite an expense associated with getting these types of shots. My current setup is at about the bare minimum, but I have totally avoided computing the cost per image :) My system is unguided, but it is driven via motors in a go-to system on my mount. I do...

    Critique Portrait: Kelly

Alex, You have a lovely model, and I personally like the lighting. In addition to what Darren has said, I would prefer if the railing were not in the scene, as it competes very strongly for my attention.

    Critique First clear day...

Dave, I agree with the others that # 5 is a great shot and composition. I love the B&W treatment you used on it. For me, the moon is clearly the subject and it is framed nicely by the stark branches of the tree. It is visually simple and my eye knows where to go. Your other images are...

    Critique Wind and Waves

DJ, It looks like it was very, very windy! I love the green color of the water, and the saturation, overall. And, as Steve has said, I wish I was there as well. As far as critique, having never been to that location, I can't figure out what is going on with the wall on the right. I am...

    Critique Golden Gate Bridge

Glenn, This is a very impressive image a certainly a wall hanger! I have been to see the bridge a couple of times, but never from this vantage point. This is a suburb image. You asked for critique, and I don't see much to comment about. The main thing that catches my eye, however, is that...
