1.4 Teleconverter

I was wondering if anyone had any experience using a 1.4 teleconverter with a Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5:6G ED lens. I don't think Nikon makes a compatible one for use with that lens and was told by Kenko that their converter would lose the ability to auto focus at 5.6. Does the auto focus make a huge difference. I want to use it for sporting events and auto races.

Thanks,
Jeff

I seriously doubt the lens is compatible with TCs, your body also probably won't AF at apertures smaller than f/5.6 (unless you have a D7100).

This may help you understand a little better...

The Kenko Pro 300 DGX 1.4x TC will mount to just about any lens from
any manufacturer... I even use mine with early AI/AIS non chipped lenses
but, of course, I manually focus them...

With a 1.4x TC you loose 1 stop of light so f5.6 becomes an equivellent
of f8... Except for the newest cameras f5.6 is the absolute limit that the
Autofocus can handle so an f4 lens is the slowest you can use and still
have dependable autofocus capability...

If you have a D4, D800, D600 or a D7100 then you can autofocus down
to f8 so autofocus may just work at the f5.6 end of that lens...

If you plan to manual focus it doesn't matter as long as it stays bright enough
for you to see what you're manually focusing on...

If you want more reach on a budget, consider upgrading to a Nikkor 70-300 VR. It's an extremely good lens for the price.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have a 7K and found it does AF at 5.6. Though I am concerned about light levels dropping. I will check out the 70-300. Thanks again.

What is FM?
Fred Miranda forums, they have a for sale forum section...

$310 is an excellent price...

You can also try KEH, they have a bunch of used ones for good prices
as well... They also have a two week no hassle return and a 6 month fix or
replace warranty on all their used gear...

Here's a link to what they have for used Nikon 70-300 VR lenses right now...

Good luck...!

I'm not saying that using at TC with the 55-200 is good idea but many of us get decent (or better) AF at f/8, with "old" cameras.

I didn't imply it was impossible, just not dependable...

I got "some" good results with my Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR and a 1.4 TC
in"good" light but I wouldn't go to a fast paced event and depend on it...

I must second the Keh suggestion. A 2-week, no hassle return policy is gold when buying used lenses. Unfortunately, each time you purchase from a forum you are at risk, whereas Keh will always back their stuff %100.
