Thank you, Darwin. You have me curious about those memories... :cat1:

Excellent series John! I wish I had my D3 the last time I was on the Rock.

Thank you, Anthony! I carried the D3 with the 14-24 and the D300 with 70-300. The long range zoom was handy for spotting Gulls nesting; the 14-24 proved to be ideal. It is an outstanding lens. My wife shot her D300 with 17-55 and her D80 with 70-300.

john, great series
if only those pictures could talk...
the stories they'd tell

wonderful job
thanks for sharing

Thank you, Greg! The stories behind the walls would be fantastic to learn! Alcatraz tours are sold out over a week in advance, so anyone planning a visit needs to book early. I met a couple visiting from Australia who wanted a tour, but found it sold out. They paid a local scalper $100 each over face to buy tickets.

Nice shots John. A great overview of the place.

Thank you, K! It is a really neat place to visit.

Nice set!

Dez, I appreciate you taking the time to look!

Great series John!
Very good perspectives of the joint and the gulls were very cooperative adding a nice touch to several of the shots.

You've captured a whole range of emotions with that series--doom, helplessness, beauty, hope, permanence and more.

Always wanted to go there.

What is the story of the cannon? What was it to be used for?

Nice series.... never been there. The cell block looks TIGHT!

Thank you! The cells are really small. Rather than shooting one of the open cells as I have done in the past, I wanted to try something different, using the 14-24. I thought showing the bars would make a more ominous effect. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you, Don! The Gulls and other birds are prolific on the island; they are protected. It is wise to wear a hat if you explore the island to keep from getting "bombed". Here is a closeup of the "residents":

Nick,

Thank you so much for the kind words. You validated exactly what I was trying to portray.

Here is a very interesting link that explains why the cannon. That was a great question. I was clueless and researched it. Glad you asked!

Here is a close-up of the front of the cannon that greets all who approach the guardhouse:

Nice series. It's a weird place and you've gotten both the beauty of the island and the "pain" of the cellblocks.
