18-200 DX VR - Good all rounder

Discussion in 'Lens Lust' started by MMRadman, Jul 10, 2008.

  1. Took these last November in Manchester UK, no fancy bokeh like much coveted primes discussed on this forum but versatile lens to carry around, judge for yourselves (even forgot to take lens shade with me on the occasion)...

    It's a good 95-98%'er.

No, it's a great travel lens (sat in Thom Hogan's bag I think). Nice moody shots of Manchester.

As for your show-off shot Bill, that's pretty nice. Lovely to imagine those rocks just sitting by the road. Just between Machester and Liverpool if I'm not mistaken :)

The 18-200mm VR lens is one of the better lenses ever made. The trick to it is learning to understand it. No lens is perfect. 18 to 200mm. My o my, that is a range!

Remember this lens took one of the best photographs taken in 2007.

  6. Ok, so let's post a few good 18x200 shots. I'm on my second one (sold it and did the ol' reget thing until I bought another one). While I'm in love with the 17x55 because of what it will do at 2.8, the 18x200 has a lot going for it.

Then there's these two shots. Both taken from the same location within 60 seconds of each other with my good ol' D80.... (no cropping done)

I'm planning on getting this lens but I'm having second thoughts... Either I get 18-200 VR or get the 50mm 1.8 w/ 70-300 VR. Currently, I only have 18-55 VR lens kit but I want to expand my range. Kinda confused right now on what to get...

you know you can't make great images with the 18-200 VR, it's not expensive enough, not 'snobby' enough, not 'pro' enough

The 18-55 II (if that is what you have) is a great lens, especially for the money. I have it and the 70-300 VR. I used both on a recent trip and loved the results of each. When I returned, I sold the 55-200 VR that came with camera. I am now thinking of getting the 50 1.8.

  10. Bill, nice sunshine, we have occasionally sun in our parts, helps with image capture  even with 18-200 DX VR

  11. Paolo, my advice is don't have second thoughts, 18-200 DX VR was my first and probably only DX lens, used it for over a year, it is a good jack of all trades. Just recently (money was good ) started investing into FX compatible primes, but will keep 18-200 for sheer convenience.

I use the 18-200mm VR lens as my walking around and travel lens. It serves me well. Check out some of my images at: http://www.pbase.com/zee71

  13. Hi Mark,

Like your Coney Island gallery. Yes, great little lens.

Not sure if the 18-55 VR is the 18-55 II... I think it is... I'm liking the idea of the 300mm range but is it much different from the 200mm? Little to no experience here...

Thats is what I'm thinking w/ the 18-200... Convenience... Now I was just reading around and saw the 16-85 VR... Made more confuse than ever. Hahaha!

I mainly like taking pictures of cars and nature...
