18-200 vs 28-105

Discussion in 'Lens Lust' started by alex_a, Jul 4, 2007.

  1. How would people who used both compare them in the overlapping range? I've used 18-70 as a walkaround lens before, and switched to 28-105 which worked out much much better -- maybe I've had a poor copy of 18-70, but I failed to bond with the lens (plus, I've found the 28-105 range to be more suitable for my needs)

Now I'm considering 18-200, mostly for VRII and the extended reach on telephoto end, but I really wouldn't want to compromise on IQ in the 28-105 range. Could people who have used both give me their input on the matter?

    So Fla
I think in the 28-105 range the 18-200 is excellent, plus the benefits of VR
when you get out near 200, the lens does have its shortcomings, esp. if the light is not good.
Also, if you are going to shoot alot at wide end, the are better options for that as well.
However as a walk around widish/mid. tele option , it is a great performer for me.
went to the zoo today and decided to tote my 80-200 2.8, cause I knew I'd be out at 200 most of the time..big difference in IQ

    for what its worth...
  3. The 18-200 has obviously got better FL and has VR and even though the IQ is great for a 11x zoom, the 28-105 is still better. So you will have to decide which is more important to you, IQ or the versatility of the extra FL and VR for low light shots.... Decisions, decisions, hey, why is it sooo hard... ;o))
  4. Thanks guys! Yes, decisions are hard. Think I'll keep the 28-105 for now, and maybe get a 70-300 VR to complement it ;-)

That's exactly what I decided to carry around in my everyday camera bag -- most of the time I have the 70-300VR, but on July 4th, I whipped out the 28-105 for the parades and get-togethers and felt i didn't miss a beat having to swap put lenses...
