200 - 400mm - advice

I am going on a trip to Botswana in August and thinking of renting the 200 - 400 with a TC. Has anyone tried using this lens with a TC? If you have, what is the quality of the images? I would love to take the 500mm but it is very expensive to rent and I think it might be too limiting. But I would really like to get longer than 400mm so thought I would use the TC.
Thanks for any advice you could give me.

With a good crop body, and a TC you will get very nice length from the lens.

I did a majority of my wildlife shooting for years and years with the 200-400 with a 1.4 and 1.7 TC. Recommend highly the 200-400 with a 1.4 TC, still auto focuses pretty fast and wlll serve you very well.

I also highly recommend the 200-400 with the 1.4 and 1.7 extenders. I found the quality quite good.

My experience has been different. I got OK results with the 1.4, and wasn't happy with the 1.7. I'd definitely try it out before you leave. But I love the 200-400.
