    Wanna see why the 200 VR cost almost 4 grand?? Tonight I tested my 70-200 (previously Tosh's exceptional copy)and compared to a few shots I had taken earlier with the 200 VR. Both shot at ISO 640, tripod mounted. Both look nice in the full version... but look at the difference cropped... WOW!! The 200 I have is amazingly sharp wide open... sharper than anything else I have tested against.

    Now that is sweet!!!:biggrin:

  3. Nice comparison :smile: can't say I'm surprised though - a prime costing 3x more expensive beating a zoom, not exactly level playing field :biggrin:

    Did you use Mirror Lock up for the 70-200 VR? Seems the shutter speed at 1/45 (according to Exif) is in the 1/50-1/3 second danger zone.

    I am very impressed with the 200 F2's wide open sharpness though!

    Good test, Don. The 200/2.0 displays a "blow you away" crispness on the Apple 30" monitors - so much so, you know immediately what lens you used when looking at the images.

    Your test really brings that out. Way to go!

    Good point... and NO :biggrin:... didn't use mirror lock up on the zoom. I thought I would be OK at 1/45 on the tripod. (but maybe not... :confused:).

  8. IS there a piece of Nikon Pro glass (currently available as new) that you don't have? :biggrin: so envious!

    Agreed!! The 200-400 blew every lens away I owned for sharpness. The 200/2.0 has the edge, but the 200-400 is awesome! Here is the 2900-400 on D2X with HS Crop:

  10. I was just curious :cool: I never use MLU either, just thought I try to eliminate any variance other than the lenses themselves. The 200mm is clearly better though... Otherwise it'd be a pretty hard sell on Nikon's part, lol

  12. Don, you're hurting me. I'm thinking I've got decent lenses and then I see your post. My most expensive lens is probably your cheapest! :redface:

    And I'm not used to seeing the 70-200VR going up against any other lens and someone commenting that it's not a level playing field... AGAINST the 70-200VR! :Crunk:

    Nice shots!

  13. I know! I just got the 70-200 VR myself and feel seriously OWNED :Little:

    :biggrin::biggrin: Yup... quite a bit actually... I don't have an autofocus 300, 400, 500 or 600.

    I have the 200 VR and 200-400 VR as my telephoto stuff... and have ZERO desire for anything else. I had a 300 2.8 AFS I and II but sold them both. The convenience of the 200-400 combined with the amazing IQ has me totally satisfied for the moment anyway. :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

  15. Sharp, sharp copy of the 200VR there pal. I've been waiting for the coffee can test :wink:

    Two of Nikon's finest in the 200VR and 200-400 in the stable. Bought from two pretty cool guys, Glenn (Tosh) and yours truly LOL :biggrin:

  16. Oh you suck! Why stop at AF? Let's go VR on 300, 400 now and on 500 and 600 when those versions comes out :biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin: Lens Lust back on you, hehe

    That's exactly why I don't have primes for the tele end, seems like cropping/framing the shot will be super hard given the range without some sort of zoom action out there.

  17. Well-stated! :wink:

    Don't sell yourself short... I see that list of yours!! :biggrin::biggrin:

    Nikon zooms: 70-200mm 2.8 VR w/ RRS tripod foot || 17-55mm 2.8 || 18-200mm VR
    Nikon primes: 28mm 1.4D || 50mm 1.4D || 85mm 1.4D

    Nothing to sneeze at...:smile::smile::smile:

    Don nice comparison. I have been thinking of getting the 200-400, but bought the 300 AFS-II, then got a deal on the 300 VR, so the II has to go, and I am selling my 500 f/4. so maybe this is the lens I should look at once I sell these.
