Day 1:

While preparing my equipment...

D6 - check
Tair 135mm f/2.8 - check
AF-S 50mm f/1.4 G - where?

Looking to the shelf - nothing...

[panic mode ON]

Where is it? It must be there...
Checking the shelf again - nothing...
Grumbling...
Looking at the F4, the D700, the D3S - nothing...
Closer look to the shelf - taking out all lenses - nothing...

[desparation mode ON]

Getting louder with my internal comments...
My wife got interested, what I was doing...
Question from her: "What's mounted to your camera?"

A closer look - AF-S 50mm f/1.4 G was already mounted...
Shame on me...

[panic mode OFF]

Enjoy

Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt...many times.

One thing I did when I began accumulating lenses beyond my initial three was to start a listing of them with relevant details and put a copy of that list in my safe deposit box at the bank, as well as of course having a printout here at home and the document on my computer. That way if one day I think, "I could've sworn I had a xx lens! Where is it?" I will have my list to assure me that either yes, I do own such a lens and I'd better find it or no, I don't own such a lens, just wished I did! I keep much of my camera gear together in a large armoire: lenses and camera bodies on one shelf and other photo-related accessories on other shelves, and the works out better for me than keeping them in bags, which is what I did in the past. Then when I'm ready to go on a photo excursion I just grab what I need and if taking two or three lenses, stick them into a bag and away we go.
