On the other hand, I am quite relieved. Now that we got the 18+ zoom and the 70-200 out of the way, maybe we will see some new serious fast wide angle primes in the not too distant future?

Welcome to our world. The current 70-200 is £1450 right now (and more typically £1550) which is $2378 today.
Same here the old 70-200 goes at Aus$2800.00 (US$2300.00) here. I've seen 3 or 4 year old ones on ebay recently for over Aus$2000.00 (US$1600.00).

Our RRP (which is what CNet are quoting here) is £1999 for the new version, so try $3280 on for size....
This is actually more in line with the Japanese MSRP at 315,000 yen. Of course, no one in Japan pays retail (at least no one with any sense). Yodobashi Camera (similar to NYC's B&H in scope) already has an online price of 267,700 yen and you also get 10% back as points. There are other places that have lower street prices AND will buy your old 70-200 for a higher trade-in price AND will give you points, so that's the route any knowledgeable person will go.

Give me a break you guys have it easy, that's the price we have to pay for the current model in France …
Yeah, but you have high taxes to make up for it... Wait... How was that again??

This is precisely why i bought a new one when talk was first breathed of it's replacement. Still 4 more years of warranty, and a great lens. All for about 1500 clams. Enjoy the new lens Nikon. pass.

If that lens performs better with the TC 17 and possibly brings usable performance with the TC 20 for sports in good light, I might think about switching my not so old 70-200.

Any other improvements than that are completely irrelevant to me.
The introduction price though is quite heavy as I remember, buying mine for 1250,- EUR with full warranty in China mainland.
