Anybody have any insights on the roadmapped 24-105 S lens? Constant (I assume) or variable aperture? Minimum aperture? Possible release date?

I remember seeing someplace that it was a constant f/4.
IOW, same as the Canon EF 24-105.
I guess Nikon could not get the IQ of a 24-120 up to what they wanted, so they shortened the zoom range to 24-105.

Conjecture based on the F 24-120, then the Z 24-105 rather than a Z 24-120.
The 24-120 was reportedly not as good as some thought it should be. Great focal length, just difficult optics.
It would be nice if Nikon pulled it out the hat and made a Z 24-120.

Could also be to position it between the 24-70 and the 24-200, although the 24-200 won't be an S lens (but in related news, I hear it's available for pre-order on Amazon now).

I owned (and loved) the F mount 28-105 D lens and at the time thought it would be perfect if it had happened to start at 24 instead of 28.

If it's an S lens, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it will be constant f/4. Just seems logical based on how they have released other S line lenses. The non-S lenses appear to be variable aperture.

Honestly, I'm more interested in the performance of the 24-200 than the 24-105, given that I got the Z6 kit lens with the 24-70/4S.

Same here. I still have mine and now it has VR (on my Z 6). I have used it a bit on the Z 6 but find the optics are disappointing compared to the 24-70S. I have great hopes for this new 24-105. If it has a macro mode like the old 28-105 it would be icing on the cake.

it was way better than the 1st 24-120 and I thought it was a great lens until I got the 16-80 but it's still a good lens
Nikon needs a walking around z lens that's as good as the 16-80, a 24-105 will suffice

Nikon has such an odd history with the 24-120. I had I think the second iteration (the one with VR) that got consistently trashed by Internet pundits. I thought it was weak, but not bad for a 5x zoom at its price point. The later f4 version was much better (at almost twice the price). But once I got the 16-80, I sold the 24-120 f4 - as even with the DX files I preferred the lens over the FX files.

Despite my interest in the 24-105, I think the 24-200 is going to surprise a lot of folks once it gets out in the field.

I remember the old 28-200 D lens that was pretty good for back then so maybe....the last thing holding me back on a z6 is a walking around lens
