24-120 VR question

A friend of mine has found one of these for $350 and has asked me what I think of the lens.

I have no first hand experience with one but I seem to recall that it plays to mixed reviews for reasons I can't recall.

Anyone care to tell me exactly what the issues are with this lens and what (if anything specific) to look for when buying a used one?

Thanks,
Woody

Chris101 has some great examples on his photo-web site, from just the 24-120VR.

I have never seen an actual comparison of photos that shows any "inferiority", but there have been negative opinions expressed. I and everyone that I am aware of that has the 24-120VR find it to be a wonderfully versatile lens that takes fine photos.

To me, and many others, it is a "perfect" walk-around lens. The VR function is a terrific tool under most circumstances. You might do a search in the forum and you will find many examples of the shots it can produce.

I have had the 24-120 for close to two years now. Its not the sharpest pencil in the box but it does fine. Its a great walk around lens. The VR on it is a marvel. I have taken shots at ridiculously slow shutter speeds with it and gotten good results

There are threads on the dpreview forum that you probably need to look for. The very first samples were considered to be junk, very soft, and had focus issues. You're too look for a high serial # one, I think the cut off is listed on that forum.

I use a 24-120 VR currently, and it's usable range is fantastic. That being said.... it's not as sharp as even the kit 18-70 lens on the D70 was, nothing a bit of PP won't handle, and it hunts for focus indoors in dimmer light, which is a bummer.
