Hello everyone, I have been away from the nikon world for over a year now, i had a d700 with the 24/70 and the 50mm, i also had the old cream machine at one point.... I am looking to get back on track and buy new gear in 2 weeks time during my trip to LA "sever NAS condition", do you think that the 24-120 is close to the 24-70 in IQ and focus speed, i have a growing 3 years daughter who is very fast and active. here are my thoughts for lenses right now, i need one general lens with good IQ, one low-light with nice bokeh and light:

24-70 + 50mm1/4G or 24-120F4+85mm1/4G

what is the best/cheapest place to buy Nikon gear in LA/orange county?

i wish i could afford both at the moment, but i am trying to figure out the best compromise between the 2 options as sets, (24-70 + 50mm1/4) or (24-120+85mm1/4), which option would you pick first, if you had to choose?!

If I had to chose I'd go with the 24 - 120 with the 85mm

The 24-120 seems to be pretty close to the 24 - 70 and the 85mm samples i have seen are simply stunning.

I think the best thing for you to do is go to a shop (if you can) check out what the focal length is like for both primes to decide which suits you better.

I'd get the 24-70 for sure. Focus is very fast, and the optics are superb, to the point that images just look magical. The 50/1.4G focuses too slowly for my taste, especially when chasing toddlers. Also, the focal length is redundant to the 24-70. I'd put that money aside and save for a 85/1.4. If the Nikon is too rich, check out the Sigma version. Either one would be much better for your daughter's portraits than the 50 and have much better bokeh.

You can't go wrong with either choice!

For *my* needs, I would take the 24-70 and 85/1.4. What are *your* needs?

Honestly if I were you I'd look at what I really want, which sounds like the 24-70 and the 85mm.

Save up and get one at a time, yes it will take longer but in the long run it will be cheaper (not buying a lens as a temporary solution) and you'll ultimately end up with what you want.

As for which one to get first? I'd go with the 24-70. It will give you a much more dyanmic range to grab great shots of the munchkin on the go

Sever NAS condition, 24-70 with the D700 should be a good deal right now, maybe i will get a 50 1.8 for the light weight setup for now and save for the better lenses later on. how is that!

For severe NAS, I would prescribe 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200 VRII, all within a 24-hr period. That should cure it quick.

24/70 and 85 1.8. there is nothing wrong with the 1.8.

Zooms with lots of distortion and slow speed have zero appeal to me.

I prefer the 24-120 and 85mm option. I have the 24-120 and 24-70 , and they are both good , but chasing a 3 yr. old around , I think the longer zoom would come in handy .

for my needs, I own 24-70 and 85 f/1.4. Fantastic combo. When I want to travel "light" this is what I carry. Then if I want to go super light I walk around with 50 & 85 both 1.4
