If you don't need 2.8, then there's always the 24-85 3.5-4.5. Should be easy enough to find. Ken R gives it a good review (though given the press he receives in some quarters I hesitate to mention it here!)

Nikon 35-70 f//2.8
Nikon 24-85 f//2.8-4
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8
Nikon 28-70 f/2.8

Just to name a few. I've heard that Sigma is due to release a new HSM version of the 24-70 which should provide good AF speed and IQ at a fraction of the Nikon's cost.

If you need 2.8, then a used Nikon 35-70/2.8, or the Tamron 28-75 which I've heard lots of good things about. If you can get by with f/4.5, the Nikon 28-105 1:2 macro is a great lens.

Congratulations on the 35-70mm f/2.8. I have one and use it constantly in my studio and on location. It's an outstanding lens and produces sharp images with wonderful color.

I use mine almost exclusively for portraiture and it does a fantastic job with skin tones.
