28-70 range

Due to finances at the time...well okay most of the time, I couldnt afford the beast so I spent 125 on a tokina 28-70 2.8

yes yes yes you get what you pay for I guess. Its on the soft side and I am disapointed in it.

What are some other alternatives in this focal range?

here is a list of glass I currently have

nikon 12-24 4
nikon 50 1.8
nikon 85 1.8
sigma 150 2.8 macro
nikon 80-200 2.8
nikon 300 2.8

I want a zoom in the 28-70 range but after picking up the 300, the $$$ for the Beast isnt there.

any suggestions??

I had a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 that was actually quite sharp. I just wasn't fond of the build and excessive creep. You'll notice a lot of posts on this forum at the moment about the Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 which I am now considering. You'll lose some range with that option, though.

Here's another vote for the Tamron 28-75 2.8.
just got a used one from a forum member here.
It really is very, very good. Build is OK, for the money spent.
No creep with mine. I'm quite impressed how sharp it is.

I see a lot of good things being said here about the 35-70 f/2.8 which is around $400-450 new...

My choice, for the sharpest lens through the range and wide open, the Nikon 35-70 f/2.8 as this is pretty well on par with the Nikon 28-70 f/2.8, and next would be the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, as if you get a good copy of this lens it can produce outstanding result..
Both of these are about the same price new and use, but suggest if you can afford new, that way you can either replace the unit if there is a problem or have the manufacture tune the lens if its not as sharp as it should be...;o))

I found the Nikon 28-70 to be significantly sharper than the Tamron 28-75 wide open. I had purchased the Nikon to replace the Tamron and had both for a short period of time. I ultimately sold the Nikon as well to get an 80-400 (recently replaced by a 70-200VR) and have just sent payment for a used Nikon 35-70 f/2.8D based on the recommendations here and at dpreview.

don't get carried away with all the hype. the lens manufacturers want you
to have NAS.

You have all the glass you need to cover that range ( foot zoom ). Ya I know
all about subject distance,perspective etc. You can overcome it with your glass and learn a lot about the joy of photography..it is not necessarily
the latest or the `most hyped zoom/s.
