300 vr and landscape shooting

Hi:

When I return to the Canadian Rockies, in September, for the fifth time,
I'll be taking my new 300mm f 2.8 af-s vr with me.

Usually I shoot some landscapes with my 18-70mm.

Have any of you nice folks done landscape shooting with this tele?

I am interested in trying to isolate interesting features in the mountain scenery and have high hopes for this lens... as it has pleased me enormously with my bird photography.

I think you'll get some great images Chuck. My wife and I were at the Canadian Rockies last fall and that trip pushed us over the edge into the DSLR world and was one of the main reasons we bought the D50. Now I'm already lusting for a D200 or better body. :biggrin:

Dave you are a prime example why I always say just go for the D200 to start. You just grow out of the other ones to fast and costs you more money in the long run.

It'll be real interesting isolating features in the mountain topography.

I remember reading John Shaw's remarks about how one can vary landscape shots by compressing objects in the mountains, with the longer lenses.

Also , another thing i just thought of.....

Last September.... on my 4th trip to the mountains... we came across 3 grizzlies, feeding quite close to the road... the first time i saw these bears, after so many trips out west, over the years.

It was about 8 am.. and i had my bigma on the d200... i fired off a few shots, out the window on my wife's side of the car

... handheld in early morning light... i had no choice !

... well, of course the shots were blurred... but decent enough to show them off at the warden's office... where they actually identified 2 of them !

... but now I am armed with the 300vr... and ready to go !!

... problem is.... for how long can my wife support the gear on her lap, at the ready, as we cruise the side roads in the early morning ...lol

Although I don't have the 300 VR, I do have the 300 AIS f/2.8. I use mine for landscapes often and it does well. Generally I will isolate a mountain feature from across the valley that I live near. In fact I used mine yesterday for that very purpose. As soon as I get the film developed, I'll post an image. I felt nostalgic last night and broke out the F5 and N90s.
