I picked up a used mint Promaster 1.7X converter. After determining that the optica were pretty lousy with almost any lens I had a local camera.repair shop remove the optics but leave the chip in place. I have not tried it yet but I would imagine it should work fine.

I have a bunch of them I picked up years ago that are just the MF but with AI lever. 5 minutes on my drill press and they work just fine on my film cameras and cameras that can meter with MF lenses. I never thought of trying an AF converter. I have a couple that are like you say "pretty lousy" and might give that a go too. Let us know when you give it a test spin to see how it works!

Gave it a brief try on my D7000 with the Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D micro.

It works ! auto focus and exposure are fine. It allows you get really close to the item.

Nothing worth showing as they were hand held and that distance everything looks bad from camera shake, but is promising
