35/1.8 or 50/1.8 which to get?

Both are fast lenses. What's the intended use(s) or need(s)? Because of the DX crop, the 35mm has a field of view of a 50mm, the 50mm has a FOV of 75mm.

Why don't you get both?

They have the 35? I'm jealous! You have to get back kind of far with the 50, so it depends on how close you need to be to your subject.

I prefer the 35mm focal length for DX bodies. 35mm 1.8's are showing up more frequently from dealers and the MSRP is $199. I bought one a few weeks ago for $199. As a matter of principle, I refuse to pay more than MSRP, but that's just me.

You didn't state what you want to use if for, nor what camera. the 35mm is a DX lens, while the 50mm is an FX lens. I really like the 50mm f/1.8 personally and with extension tubes it can do a decent job with still macro work.

On a D70 the 35/1.8 makes more sense as a "normal" lens than the 50/1.8

But that's based on the assumption that you're looking for a "normal" lens. What do you wnat to use the lens for?

i got out my 18-55 and look in the view finder....

50mm was way to close on DX and 35mm seemd much better.

I still may get a 50mm for indoor sports

You might not but I definitely prefer the 35 to the 50 on DX. The focal length is just right--it's normal! Not to mention it's sharper wide open and has better bokeh.

This is the first time I have seen somebody state that the 35 1.8 is sharper than the 50 1.8. I guess I am kind of surprised by that.

im mainly going to use this lens for a low light option and something that is just easy to carry around at like theme parks and what not.. it will be used mostly for portraits

If you are going to mostly be using it outside, I think the 50 will be a more useful focal length. Indoors (houses) the 35 will be easier to work with.

35, its more versatile, approximating a standard lens when used on DX.
