Dude, you gotta stop posting those nice pics taken by 35/2. I've been dying for one.

  2. Dude, totally agreed. Here is one taken hand-held with a D70, at ISO 1400, 1/30s f/2.5

nice shots guys .....even though it's only f2 the ability to shoot this glass at slower shutter speeds makes it a dandy low light lens ....;-))

ah, where's my night time walkaround and dimly lit restaurant pictures that I had? I'll have to track those down and upload them so I can post them here. hehe

Okay here they are. This was at a Don Pablos restaurant on New Year's Day this year, which is also my wife's birthday, so of course I took her out to dinner. I just loved all of the colors in this place at night, and Santa had just brought me my 35/2 so of course I had it with me.

All of these shots are at f/2.

Can 28/1.4 beat this? And how much better?

I am considering 28/1.4 since it's so hard to find a 35/2 at this moment.

i thought that the 28/1.4 was the hard-to-get lens. 28mm is much wider than 35mm though. i found it hard to shoot comparisons between my sigma 30/1.4 and the 35/2 due to a large difference in focal length, and the 28mm is even wider than the 30mm. performance is said to be the same at f/2, but the 28mm does have an extra stop.

i haven't played with the 28 1.4 but i suspect like the noct, it's in another league altogether...;-)

Steve, nice pics but there's a load of CA in most of them...try desaturating the blue or purple channel and increase the brightness on the same .....;-))

I think the CA makes it look better :)

Yeah, the 35/2 does seem to have a lot of CA near highlights. the sigma 30/1.4 has much less CA. the 35/2 is still an excellent lens, though.

well if you're considering a 28/1.4 then price must not be the issue because as I recall the 28/1.4 was one mighty expensive lens. In that case, B&H has the 35/2 in stock new.

In all honesty, for these particular shots an 18-200 VR would have done just as well which you already have while also giving you a bit more depth of field. As long as what you're shooting isn't moving VR will work just fine. For a lot of my baby pics though, you definitely need the speed of fast glass.

Yeah in these particular shots I like the luminance/glowing effect that the CA added from the bulbs. In outdoor shots when there isn't as much color it can get pretty annoying though. Stopped down to f/2.8 it goes away for the most part, but then you lose a lot of your night time shooting capabilities.

$299 was the grey market one I think. I bought mine new from B&H and I'm 99% sure I paid $320-ish.
