I must be drawing a blank, but if I'm thinking right... The only way for the Nikon system to match a lens like a Canon 400mm F/5.6L HSM would be to get a 300mm F4 AF-S and a 1.4x teleconverter?

    Am I missing something?

Reviews I have seen show the image quality of the 300mm + TC1.4 is not as good. (I know some people say otherwise, but I've never seen a supporting example image.) The old Nikon MF is a nice lens. I used to own one. The Sigma APO Macro has decent optics (better than you might think).

i've played with a MF version of the 400 F5.6 and yes, its quite nice. But who wants to manual focus a 400mm lens these days?!

What about the focus speed on the sigma? I know my D70 wouldn't be able to drive it very fast, but my F100 has the F5 focus motor in it

  4. The thing about the 400 f5.6L is it literally jumps into focus AND is tack sharp wide open.
I've had 1/2 a dozen over the years and still keep one on a 40D for high keeper rate BIF.
Wish Nikkor offered it and while we're wishing...VR. I'd gladly pay $2K for one!
BTW it's "USM" not HSM. Handheld on my 60th Birthday!

I noticed my HSM/USM error after I posted it. I was looking at Sigma lenses this morning, so it just kinda slipped in there.

  6. I'd love for Nikon to produce an AF-S version of the 400 f/5.6, as well as a version of Canon's 400 f/4.

  7. Why do people keep complaining about Nikon lenses not matching Canon? I don't see a 200-400 VR or a 14-24 2.8? We got some great lenses and I have no desire for any of the niche glass that Canon produces.

  8. There is a difference, and a market for some of the lenses Nikon doesn't produce. In my opinion, canon has a better 'advanced amateur' lineup of lenses, like their 400 1:5.6, 70-200 1:4, and some others. I believe nikon would do very well with selling a 400mm 1:5.6 af-s, as long as the price isn't too ludicrous for the lens, maybe around 1500-2000. the 200-400 1:4, and the 14-24 1:2.8 are pretty pricey pieces of optics, and sometimes it's only wealthy non-pros, or full time professionals who can purchase them.

In my opinion, the 200-400VR is an outrageously expensive optic. Sure, it's incredibly sharp and well made, but it's COMPLETELY out of the price range of anyone except those with the biggest checkbooks. You could get two used bodies and a 180mm F2.8D and 300mm F4 AF-S for far less than a 200-400VR.

Don't forget, Nikon made a 70-210 F4 years ago

If you mean the AF lens, it was not so good.

Because in this case it is a serious omission IMO. It is the ideal birding and wildlife lens for the serious amateur.

You could of course buy the Canon lens, and a used 30D body. Or even a used 350D body. Some people do keep mixed systems.

And the Canon 300mm f/4 does have IS for about the same price as the Nikon.

AF 80-400 VR is the other option. The AFS 70-200VR with TC20E will also give you 400/5.6 but I doubt quality is good as the other options.

400mm does seem weak in Nikon's lineup - Besides the massive 400/2.8 Nikon seems content for us to use zooms or TCs to get there.

    a 400 1:5.6 AF-S VR would be nice...

but wouldn't hold my breath for Nikon to release such a lens.

    Better yet a 600 1:5.6 AF-S VR, for 1999.99 would be AWESOME!!!

  17. A new 400mm 3.5 would be my first request, but this is turning into the canon L envy thread from a while back.

Actually, I the the 300 + the TC's 1.4/1.7 fill the niche quit well.

There is nothing you can do with at 400 5.6 that the 300 can't do, in fact it does autofocus with the 1.7, a 400 5.6 with a tc 1.4 would not AF......
