Which lens? What settings?

any lens is fine, depends if you want things in the forground or just the fireworks in the shot

Here are some tips:
1. Shoot in Manual mode
2. Low ISO
3. Small Aperature
4. Use a Tripod
5. You can try to auto focus on the fireworks when it is shoot up or set the focus to manual and to infinity. then adjust as needed depending on your distance.
6. Shutter speeds: Depends on what you want it to look like. Long trails, longer exposure, quick burst, shorter exposure. If you have a remote trigger it's would be perfect. You can just hold the shutter open as long as you want!
7. Flash: Rear Curtain if you want to have people in the shot.

fireworks

I experimented a few years ago in Custer, SD and came up with the advice listed above. I first tried auto modes, but switched to manual focus and exposure. I was trying to balance fireworks with background, not freeze action. I ended up using 1-3 second exposures @ f/8-11. The lens was a Nikkor 18-35mm as we were pretty close to the action.

I am going to be different this year. I am going to set up two cameras on automatic capture. That should be interesting!

I used my now-sold 18-70 for that shot... I haven't tried my 17-55 for it yet, I'm thinking it might be kinda short, but we'll see tonight!
