The 85 1.4 can be found for a decent price used, about 800-850 or so... A bit bulkier.

How can a guy who owns a 14-24, 24-70 and a 200/2 call a teensy 85/1.4 bulky???

It's only 19.8 ounces and 2.8 inches long. And yes, it's twice the size of the 50/1.4, but it's a Cream Machine .

Start with the 50, I have just seen your post about trying the two while your grandson was watching a movie and the 50 is the winner... Once you master it (which you seem to have done already) and once you get really used to it you surely have found a deal on a used 85...

terri..... IF you care to spend the money
the 85/1.4 should be your first purchase
wish i had one

I dunno, Greg. You've got the 14-24. 24-70, 70-200, and 200/2. Wow, what a lineup... the best money can buy.

But then you've pinched pennies on the 85/1.8 and the 50/1.8. About time to upgrade, isn't it? It'll cost you less than the price of a new hood for your 200/2 .

Terri,

If I were you I would get the 50 1.4 first. For newborns you will be shooting at close range anyway. For the twins; once you get the settings to work for you, you will see it is a real gem! The 85 1.4 is great but I think you will find it to be a bit long to shoot the new baby. IMHO:smile:

well, frank
i might have the lenses..... but, i don't have YOUR skill, quite honestly
but, i'm trying to improve

i got the 50/1.8 and the 85/1.8 before i got the other lenses
the 50/1.8 is ok.... i never should have bought the 85/1.8

i will upgrade that lens soon
i guess i was toying with the idea of the zeiss 100/2... can't justify both
different lenses and i DID read your thoughts about getting older and autofocus..... and agree with that

we'll see...
i appreciate your thoughts... i really do

Thanks so much for the advice. You have experience with the same type of shooting that I want to do. I appreciate it.

Frank: You certainly can't argue that the 85 1.4 bulkier than the 50 1.4!!!

I found the 85 to be too long indoors, but we have a tiny house (I'd obviously rather spend money on camera gear than real estate!), so anything over 35 is not wide enough... But I really liked it.... and the 50 too, neither of which I own anymore...
