I did a search and didn't find any posts where anyone mentions using this combo. Will it work? Has anyone tried this? The 70-300 VR takes 67mm filters, so would that mean I should get the 72mm 500D and a step-up ring?

    TIA.

I used the 70-300 vr and the Nikon 5T and 6T close up lens. The 5T and 6T are the Nikon equilivant to the Canon 500. This combination worked very well for close up requirements. Using the step-up ring as you describe would be the way to attach the 500 to the lens. I think you will enjoy this combination.

Thanks. I haven't been able to find the 5T or 6T online.

I see that there is quite a price range on step up rings. Are there some that I should avoid?

I believe that Nikon no longer makes them. You will probably have to go with the 500D.

Get the 77mm, if you are going to use a ring, that way if you get a 70/80-200 or a 300 f4 you can use it on them with great results (I do and love it).

the 77 is a beast though weighing almost a pound (12 oz. I think).

Thanks. I got a great deal on the 72mm used (mint), so I went with that one since it will primarily be used on the 70-300 VR. I ordered a general brand step-up ring from B&H and am just waiting for that to arrive.

If I ever do get the wonderful 70-200 VR, it will be in the distant future, so I grabbed the deal on the 72mm while I could.

The set-up will be used while hiking (with kids in tow - one on my back), so the lighter the better. ;)
