All five are quite sharp and contrasty when viewed to fit the screen. Even zooming in reveals no clear winner between the two. If you're making the point that the 500PF is a great value, I'm already convinced. In fact, I ordered one from B&H earlier today.

They are all full res exports of raw via lightroom - same small amount of sharpening.
The last two (by frame number) are from the 500mm PF at 5.6. I find it pretty amazing that a lens shot wide open can hold up to a 400mm 2.8 with 1.4TC that is stopped down one stop. Granted on the D500 we don’t see the far edges.

Not yet. It requires legs but still is the go to in low light. In a blind on a gimbal it is great. The 500mm PF is the handheld companion.

I didn't look because at this size I know the 500pf holds up to anything but 2.8 on the 400 is like nothing else

In fairness to the 509pf the 400e is IMO the best lens ever made by Nikon
I agree Randy, I was as not expecting the 500PF wide open to hold up to the 400mm with TC at 5.6. The big difference I can easily handhold the 500PF.
