50mm/1.4 AFD: Japan vs China -- diff ???

Discussion in 'Lens Lust' started by arthury, Apr 11, 2007.

  1. All,

For those who have experienced both, could you honestly tell me if you have seen differences besides the printed letters "Made in Japan" and "Made in China" ?

Optically no difference. build quality is where some say there is a difference. I'm not sure I haven't had the japan version.
  4. The Chinese-made one is optically superior to the Japanese made one.

...OK just kidding, just ruffling feathers :)
  5. I wouldn't care about things like that...
  6. I've owned both, taken samples, and can see no difference in image quality. The more recent Chinese-made 1.4 bodies do feel alittle cheaper in quality, but I'd say the glass is equal. Bottom line: don't sweat it.
  7. Oh, one more thing . . . the body quality difference on the 1.8s seem more noticable - with the older Japanese-made bodies being better. If memory serves, the older 1.8 Japanese-made bodies are metal, not plastic, like the current versions.

Maybe it's insane, but cheap feel of the lens makes me feel uncomfortable.... even if it is optically good :(
