50mm repair

Discussion in 'Lens Lust' started by kaige, May 10, 2007.

  1. I have a late 80's 50mm/1.4 which was made in Japan. I thoroughly enjoy
shooting with it because it is fast, solid, very well constructed and
    produces fine results.
The problem is that over the years the threaded portion which accepts
filters et al has been damaged and 40% of the threaded portion is
missing. Have been living with the lens 'as is' for quite awhile but every now and again I get into a situation where a filter would make shooting easier. I would
like to know if I am facing a easy, quick repair job or if major surgery will be required.

I am no expert, but I would be surprised if the repair cost is less than the cost of a new 50mm/1.4. Of course, I don't know if the particular lens that you have is a sought after collectors item or if it has significant sentimental value.
  3. I do believe that you are right on the money, Neil. I have only the vaguest
idea of its market value because of the cosmetic damage. Its real value is
that it consistently produces fine results and is lightning quick. Built to last
but not to be abused, accidently or otherwise. Its a keeper. I had faint
hopes that an easy fix was available.

Of course, there is probably a set fee just to examine it. I think I am correct in saying that a new 50mm 1.4 is about $250.00 US. Maybe a local camera store could give you a better estimate of the likely cost of repair?
