I wanted to pick up something shorter and lighter for times when my 70-200 is inconvenient. Just wondering what others are using? Thanks.

That depends. If you don't need wide-open, a 70-300VR is pretty nice. If you do need wide open, just pick a prime in the right focal length. You just have to think a bit about what you want to shoot.

That's the hard part. The 180 2.8 and 70-300vr are on the top of my list. Thanks.

  4. I carry the 85/1.4 when I leave the big boy at home. The 85/1.8 would work just as well (possibly better) as a short tele to carry with a wide zoom. The 17-55 and 85 work VERY well together for those times I *might* need some more length and adds very little weight to the bag. For more length, the 18-/2.8 would be perfect.

  5. I use AI-S (manual focus) primes: 85/1.4, 105/2.5 and 180/2.8, or a subset of those, if I know a bit about the shooting situation in advance. Those older lenses have the advantage of being smaller than their modern counterparts, espcially the 105!

  6. for the money...180 would be my choice!

  7. I pack my 80-200 everywhere (along with a 17-35 and a 28-70)

When I can only bring one, it's the 18-200VR. Incredibly versatile.

  9. The main gear I use is, Tokina 12-24, Nikon 28-70 & 80-200. But if I want to just wander around with a really light weight camera/lens, I'll use my Nikon 28-200G as I find this very good from 28-55 (stopped down) but very sharp wide open above even at 200mm... Or if I don't need the long end I will use the 24-85G....

  10. I use the same lens as Wally. The 28-200G was the first lens I got after the initial kit. Bought it knowing from my P&S days that the 18-70 wasn't enough reach. It's still the lens I reach for when it's time for a light walk around situation. It and the 12-24 will cover most everything.

    John,

I went with the 70-300 VR during my recent trip. Worked like a charm.
