70-200 VR and TC20?

I am moving towards a 3 lens system, a 17-50 range f/2.8 lens (sigma for now, nikon later), the 70-200 VR and the 105mm micro nikkor.

This satisfies about 85% of all my photographic needs.

Every now and then reach bites me, I tend to do a bit of birding. I will pretty much run out of budget once I get my 70-200 VR now. As a short term solution, how does the 70-200 VR + TC 20 solution work?

Is there too much lack of quality with a TC 20 on a 70-200 VR?

I owe Virginia (Beaucamera) some shots with the 70-200VR and the 1.7 TC. I can make you some with the 2.0 for comparison if you like.

It will be this week-end, cause it's dark when I get out of here if that is OK.

I would appreciate that. I know it is a HUGE compromise, but it saves me for now. This is a terribly expensive hobby :( .
