This lens has some pretty bad chromatic aberration, at least from my experience. What other zooms would you guys recommend? (preferably fast glass)

  2. If you want faster and zoom, then the Nikkor 70-200 VR 1 would be a great choice for crop bodies. If you don't need f/2.8, then the 70-300 VR is a lot better than the G from what I understand (never shot the G, but the samples you posted above are pretty bad, even at the mini file size you posted)

yeah, that is pretty bad. At 100% zoom, it would probably look really bad.

70-300G is one of the 5 worst lenses ever made by Nikon. Just stay away from it :)

I don't know about Sigma, but Tamron made a 40th anniversary edition 70-300 VC USD (Ultra Silent Drive) that's been getting good reviews. It's $449 - $50 rebate.

I'm hoping Tamron makes a 40th anniversary edtion 70-200 VC USD, lol.

  8. I had a Sigma 70-200 2.8. It was the first version with an HSM motor. It was a great lens. The only reason I sold it is because I didn't use it enough to justify it.

DxOMark's test on it was bad...you can see it compared to the Nikon 70 200mm here:

  10. I can vouch for the Tamron 70-300 VC. I had it when I shot Canon and it was an excellent lens. They go used for about $375.

Anything would better than 70-300G; I got it as a part of two-lens-set with F80. While the other cheapo 28-80 was surprisingly good for its price, the tele zoom was good enough as paper holder. Latest 70-300 VR is waaaaay better.
