I's 2:20AM in NY and I just saw the news. A major earthquake has occurred, triggering a tsunami. Devastating effects in N. Japan. It may be the 4th or 5th biggest earthquake in modern, recorded history by some reports.

Potential tsunami throughout the Pacific according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
http://www.weather.gov/ptwc/

I hope everyone and their families are safe.

From PTWC
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
0259 AM HST FRI 11 MAR 2011
MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

Lots of weird stuff seems to be happening. Like an earthquake at the Suez canal when those Iranian ships were about to go through to the Med.

Tsunami watch now for West Coast of the US. I hope you guys are a few miles inland or getting ready to move.

I'll say this much: It is surreal watching a tsunami live on TV, especially when it's happening in places that you have been to.

Fortunately, none of my immediate relatives have been affected.

On a note related to this web site, the most damage seems to have occurred in Sendai where Nikon has its Japanese factory.

Wave due to hit here at 5am, that's about 6.5 hrs from now. Will be much smaller though by the time it gets here.

Ciao Isamu
nice to hear from you... I can't even imagine such an earthquake! L'Aquila was around 1/1000th of what you had (in energy dissipated I mean, I remember a 5.9 or so) and the last one we had in the area where I live - enough to notice the shake and be frightened - was "just" a bit more than 1/10000th (5.1)
The "funny" (!) thing is how silly are newspapers continuously reporting fake shakes (2.4, 3.9, things like this) as "scaring shake in the night in...." (!) occurring here now and then just to fill blank paper....

Surprised to hear my school (UCSD) issue an email to all students warning about a tsunami, although they're only expected to be a meter tall. Does that even count as a tsunami?
