Wow.. those are great shots Gale...
  3. Gale, Looks like the D200 and 80-400 is a good match. Nice photos and he is truly a dancer.
  4. I think that's the first flip shot I've seen with wings spread apart! Way to go! Now I'm anxious to get back over there to go shooting again! But it'll just have to wait another week! Hope you get out some more and post some more shots!!

    Dave,Thank you very much.

Been so long coming and this is only the first to be able to get action. They don't dance slow either.
Hope I can do even better.

  6. Gale - So do you feel the the D200 can focus faster with the 80-400 than the D100. Just curious?

Nice shots BTW - The D200 can rattle off 5 shots per second?

I am very proud the 80-400 VR was able to do this. You can ask the guys, I agonized with that lens and the D100.

    Thank you very much

    A 300 f4 would be better quality.

    Thank you Kevin,
I am truly amazed the 80-400 did this...

I think quality would be better with a 300 f4.
But for now, I am a happy camper.

Just need to learn the camera better and get a technique. This was hope and pray.

    I got several birdies today.
American Kestral, Limpkin, Anhinga and a turtle with some really nice light.
So for 2 hours only, I think it was a good outing.
Battery is charged and I am going tomorrow.
Boy I can eat through CF cards though. But glad I shoot raw.
  9. Wow... nice serie, Gale. If the weather can clear out a little bit, I will go out to try the X machine gun.

Good going Gale (hmmm, G - G - G)! After seeing your earlier & this post about the 80-400VR I tried mine at home and found that it did seem a lock faster on the D200 than the D70.

I certainly like the VR lenses with the D200, it really helps ME with handheld shots and the D200.

    Hello Dear Dao,

Not sure I can match the BIG machine gun, but sure beats the D100 all to heck, especially with that dog lens :>)))

    Still think I need to get a 300 f4.

Well I am happy for now.

    Thank You very much :>))

Can't wait to see your images.

That 80-400 performed great, compared to what it was doing.
I had no hunting problems with it at all.

Thsy help me alot to Ken.....

I still need a 300 f4 though. For best quality. But that damn tripod eeeekkk

If all I am going to do is be in one place thats great.
But hauling it around for me is alot.

    Thank you very much.
    Do they look ok.

Hard for me to tell with this LCD monitor.
I have to rely on you all to tell me how to adjust and what.

The D200 flies. Not quite as fast and the H and the X but damn close.

I am satisfied with the lens at this point. I will keep it.
    Also need to get a 300 f4.

    thank you :>))

This has been a long time coming.
You have no Idea the frustration I have had the past year.

The 80-400 did not hunt on the D200.

In air shots I have not had the opportunity to do yet.
But the snowey is just as fast and dances all over the place.
  14. Awesome Gale, well done.

    Thank You Martin,
    Thats very kind.

    I tried....

    Merry Christmas
  16. Way to go, Gale! Lookin' good with that 80-400VR. I went looking for flying birds today and there was nothing (well, sparrows flying but just try to get them in flight, no thank you! I need something bigger--) Watched a hawk sit in a tree for 15 minutes, but he refused to budge. So all I got were squirrels  But will keep trying, hopefully you will find some flying birds soon and let us know how it goes!

    Thank You Janet.

I was amazed at the great reaction time. Locked rigth on. Now I did miss a few times for sure :>)) You know how that is :>))

Far Better than my D100. Might be something not right on the D100.. Really need to send it into Nikon. It is way overdue for an overhaul. :>)))

Merry Christmas to you and yours :>))

Nice going Gale! Bet you're feeling a huge sense of relief now that you know you made the right decision and can get action shots now! A couple are a *little* hot on my monitor, Some negative EV (-.7 to -1.0) would'a been about right here, but all in all, nice job catching the snowy doing his dancing thing!
On a side note, how come you don't save your shooting data?

Remember I shoot Manual :>))) Could still look hot though.
    Numbers, numbers, numbers LOL
    Shooting data..lol
    Cause I don't know how..
I aint a pixie peeper.. Don't have time for all that stuff. To old..Times a wastin.

thank you for your kind compliments.....
Besides everybody shoots better than me anyway..So who cares.

I need a hand on Pro to teach me.

Since I've been shooting with Harris,, he's got me to move over to shooting Matrix and using negative EV all the time when it's bright out, and there's white on the bird! I always used to shoot Center Weighted. Ron teaches Matrix when shooting birdies too. So, if it's good enough for him, (and Harris), it's good enough for me!
