  2. None of the above

Get a true all around street lens... 35/1.4 or better yet a 105/1.8

I have been thinking of the 105 1.8

    and another 50 1.2

my manual focus skills need a lot of work

I think the 105 DC wide open is probably better than the 105 1.8
and stays that way until F4 or so.
thats what I'd be using it at

  4. Frank, the 105/1.8 is tack sharp wide open ... Super sharp ask Frits or I could drive you nuts and go street shooting with mine and post some samples for ya (insert devilish smiley here )

the 105DC gets my vote, mostly because i prefer the reach/being farther from the subject over the 85mm. with the D3, the half stop doesn't really count for much.

    ricky

F1.4 to F2 is a full stop, but I understand
on FX, I guess the choice may be easier...

  7. Hey, Frank,

I love my 85. Railfan (Ron) was kind enough to lend me his 105 for awhile, but I just couldn't get used to it. I never really experimented with the DC feature, but I couldn't quite get the hang of the focal length.

    But the 85 rocks.

    thanks Doug
I don't know if I would care to use the DC feature, I just love the images I have seen with it

I am assuming the 105 is best for head shots , maybe more so with a DX body

that being said, I would use it more for street candids, maybe some outdoor "portrait" type shots
however, I generally like a little surroundings in my pictures, so maybe the 85 is more suited to that

Go for the 85, Frank. You can always stop it down to f2, but you can't bring the 105 down to 1.4

    thats true Francis, very true

I already have the 85, but for some reason, I am wanting to trade to the 105 DC
also was looking at 105 1.8 and 135/2 AiS lenses

I am so all over the place lately...

That's because you opted for the D300 instead of the D700. Had you chosen the D700, you would not be so confused

Just pullin' yer leg about that, Frank. In all honesty, though, I see you as an 85/1.4 kind of guy based on the images that you post.

well, there was other factors as well. the dc lenses tend to suffer from sample variation on par or even worse than the 50 1.4. i know of more than one photog that sent their dc back to nikon several times and in the end nikon never made it right. i don't need that kind of grief! the 135 seems to be the worst of the 2..just my observations based on others not so pleasant first hand experiences ....might wana talk to Paul concerning this as well:wink:

    yah
I know Paul is not a fan of the DCs
and I am too impatient to be sending lenses back and forth also..

I have a nice 85 copy, so why mess with a bad thing, right?

I am still lusting for the 135/2 AiS though...
