It's been a cold and late spring so far here in Thunder Bay, so I was surprised to hear the call of an American Goldfinch in my yard. They have been scarce in our area so far. I went out to the back of my yard and set up my gear in hopes of getting a decent picture....when ....and I had to look twice this fellow landed on the branch of my Red PIne tree:

Now according to Mr Audoban's handy manual this is a Red-naped Sapsucker! And again according to my learned sources he should be on the west coast somewhere. ( I can stand being corrected so please do so if I am misinformed. ) At any rate this is another first for me this year.

1. Great Grey Owl

2. Red-bellied wood pecker

3, Red-naped Sapsucker.

Oh...and I did manage to get a shot of Mr American Goldfinch:

Nice bird shots! The woodpecker is a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, normal for your neck of the woods, very similar to the Red-naped. Check your bird guide for the differences.
