Hi All,

I saw an unusual sight at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary a few days back. The ponds are starting to ice over with only some holes for free water. In one of these openings a group of coots were swimming about and feeding. Along comes a large glaucous winged gull who attacks the coots. It was quite a scene and the gull chased the coots about. finally the coots were able to get up on the ice and run for cover in the reeds and grasses at the side of the pond.

The refuge biologist who also witnessed the event had never seen anything like this either.

All the coots got away but I suspect some were hurt by this attack.

Cheers,
