Activity at the Viera Wetlands

Just an FYI for those traveling to this area, the property to the north of the wetlands is being prepared for development. Last Saturday there was a lot of activity that I fear will have a negative impact on the wetlands. This area is marked as “future development” on the Viera Company’s maps and I guess the future is here.

What I hope will not continue was the very annoying helicopter circling the area rather low. I believe that alone pretty much ruined any chances for wildlife photos. On the ground, I could hear and see there the construction vehicles scraping the dirt and dump trucks going back and forth hauling it away and returning empty.

There was a noticeable lack of wildlife. Normally, I’ll see great blue herons in nests, on the grounds, everywhere. Only saw a handful and only on the shores. Also noticed a lot less ibis, egrets and smaller birds. My hope is the helicopter was the cause and they’ll be back next time I’m there. I really hope so. I’ll update this post after my next visit.

Very sad indeed. On my trip to Viera this past March I noticed that things were different, not nearly the wildlife as in past years. Well, you can't stop progress, I guess but what a shame. I have fond memories of Viera from long past when the NikonCafe held get togethers there.

It gets worse every year to where it’s not a main stop for me anymore

Sad that greed is going to eventually destroy the wetlands

Don Grainger on the far right, stldon, just had lunch with him a week or so ago, unfortunately he does not shoot images any longer, but is still kicking and buying old Gran Torinos and Fairlanes to enjoy.

This might be called development - but I don't think it qualifies as progress. Hate to see the wetlands become less than they currently are.
