Interesting article using photography and other techniques to analyze how flocks of birds land on water---without collisions!

They found that water birds land along the local magnetic field. So if you want to catch birds landing across (l/r to you) your field of view, set up perpendicular to the Earth's magnetic field. That setup won't get as clear a view of straight-on landing shots.

It might also work with open fields, but breaks down among shrubs and branches.
