Advice on aerial photography.

I have been asked to photograph from the air, a ceremony called a "paddle out". A group of surfers memorialize a fellow surfer who has passed away by paddling out on their surfboards and forming a circle. I plan on using a D90 and a Nikkor 70-200 VR II and possibly a 2X teleconverter. I prefer the crop factor of the small D90 sensor.

I have the option of renting a helicopter or a plane. A bi-plane might work due to it's slow flying ability which is around 50mph, but think that the stability of a helicopter might be the best way to go.

I have never done anything like this before, so if anyone has personally done aerial photography, I would appreciate any advice on equipment and aircraft needs.
